Avengers Age of Ultron
Better than the other avengers movies.
7/10

Night Crawler
I watched the whole thing convinced it was a remake or based on a true story, but can't find any evidence of it online. Very good.
9/10

Reconstruction of William Zero
A wine and cheese kind of Sci Fi, thought provoking, good but not wholly satisfying.
7/10

In many ways I think Nightcrawler is based on true stories, which is why it's such a great film. It absolutely nails sleazy journalism and our reluctant addiction to it. I reckon it's Gyllenhaal's best film since Donnie Darko, though Zodiac is up there too.

Elysium (Via Pvr recording)

OK sci-fi. Good action sequences are let down by a plot that never quite seems to have the courage to explore its ideas in anything other than the broadest terms. Sharlto Copley is way too ott as the villain.

If you're happy watching spectacle without saying "Hey, but what about..." then this is worth catching. Jodie Foster is also doing something interesting with her accent in this one.

Yeah watched that too, and agree. All the right moving parts but nothing interesting or engaging really.

The Jungle Book.
Darker and more scary, I thought, than the animated version that those of us who are the right age will remember. Very, very impressive special effects.
I enjoyed it, though I do like my films simple and cheerful

Only Disney could have taken the jungle book and created 'that' animation from it. I'm glad they've tried to rectify it, my kids will see it this weekend. I they come home terrified, I'll know Disney got it right this time.

Shere Khan give me nightmares when I was little.

The spy who came in from the cold - a cracker from the cold war era, based on a Le Carre novel and starring Richard Burton who gives a riveting performance. Can't recall seeing him in anything that wasn't pants - those big Cleopatra-type blockbusters - but in this he has a tight-wound intensity that brings to mind early Brando. A real period-piece, but one that stands up superbly well. 9/10.

Look Who's Back, on Netflix. A German satire in which Hitler comes back to modern-day Berlin. Some think he's a comedian, others take him seriously. Quite witty and thought provoking.

True Grit (2010, PVR'ed)

Jeff Bridges is great, but Matt Damon and Haillie Steinfield both struggle to convey the self importance of their characters in the way that their counterparts in the original film did. Beautifully filmed, the humour is played better than in the original film, and I found the villains more convincing; but found the diversions from the book more annoying.

IMDB has this at 7 out of 10, and I think that's about right.

Slow West (Netflix)

Terrific Western that's hard to describe; part quest, part chase, part contemplation on what the lawless frontier was like and part whimsical travelogue. Just wonderful, and streaming now on Netflix - very much worth watching.

The Parallax View.

A 1974 political thriller with Warren Beatty.

Netflix says it's taut and full of suspense, I say it was dull with plenty of gaps in the plot and a meaningless ending, 4/10.

Repo man. I remember watching this years ago, and thinking it was good, now I am not so sure. I need to watch it again. Good performances by Harry Dean Stanton and Emilio Estevez, but the rest! or are they supposed to be acting in a sort of B movie way.
So I will give it 7/10.

Captain America: Civil War
Enjoyable no brain action movie from the Marvel movie franchise factory. More of an Avengers movie to be fair, and at times it was difficult trying to keep up with how many super heroes were on screen at once and who was fighting who.
Still, it sets the next few movies up. Don't forget to stay right to the very end for the TWO sneaky extra bits.

It's funny, I know the pointy-head consensus says the remake is 'better' than the original, and I can kind of see what they're driving at, but even though I've seen it (and enjoyed and appreciated it) twice, when I think True Grit it's absolutely the John Wayne version that comes to mind. "Fill your hands you sunnuvabitch!" I like both, but if I had to choose just one...

In other news, 'The way way back' last night - a really (quietly) enjoyable coming of age movie set in a seaside summer endured by an awkward teen, escaping from his beloved but downtrodden mother and her new domineering boyfriend to the comparatively life-ehancing atmosphere of a local water park presided over by an amiable and amusing slacker. 8/10.
