Just completed a distinctly odd double bill: Ilo Ilo (think eye-lo) - a downbeat and very moving Singaporean film about the experiences of a rather sad and disfunctional family barely surviving an economic depression, and the touching relationship that develops between their troublesome 11 year old son and the Filipino maid they hire - followed by Open Range, a Kevin Costner western starring him and an ageing Robert Duvall (who plays an absolute blinder) which I enjoyed enormously...much more than I'd anticipated. An evening well spent!

A pretty good low budget (I assume) sci-fi horror - on Netflix.

GI Joe: Retaliation

Unpleasant action cobblers, scripted, one suspects, with half an eye on what scenes might work nicely in a tie in video game. Even the presence of "The Rock", of whom I've become quite fond, couldn't save it. I hope it bought Jonathan Pryce a nice conservatory, in any case.

''In the Fog''

a Russian film set during the war. Really good film. The cinephotography is excellent, really good scene set and in depth.
A bit of a film noir but each individuals background during the film is shown before the war.
I love a good B film, independent film I do.

4/5

This has been available to stream on Netflix for a while, but I've only just got around to it. It's a rather good horror of the "creeping dread" variety (I kept thinking of Ju-On (The Grudge) while watching, although they're quite different).

I think what it has to say about loss, and dealing with loss works too. Well worth making time for.

Re-Animator - 9/10

The ultimate in camp horror ridiculousness. A properly endearing bit of cult cinema. It's fun, gory, self aware and clever. I'd recommend it to anyone.

I also gave World War Z another watch (see my previous scathing comments about it on this thread)

As an interpretation of the book it's still pish, but as a zombie survival effort it's solid, fast paced and well shot.

Still, there's a lot of timing flaws, plot holes and utterly needless storytelling just in case you hadn't got what was going on. I liked the silhouetted appearance of Peter Capaldi, almost Hitchcock-esque.

I don't think I gave it a rating first time around so... 5/10

Oh yeah, and Driller Killer - 5/10

Another one to get into the Halloween spirit with, a "video nasty" banned in Britain by not much more than a poster and some redtop outrage.

It has some excellent cinematography and some properly gruesome bits, but not much beyond that. I've always thought of it as a weird cross between Damerel and Taxi Driver, both of which are superior.

I have gave it a miss but since seeing your glowing endorsement I might watch it ^_^
