Fast & Furious 7. Not the best in the franchise. Had all the usual elements. Slightly too many lucky coincidences. Fairly disjointed. To be expected considering Paul Walkers death which was dealt with admirably. 8 could really do with being a lot more coherent and concentrating on the car chases a bit more.

Good set of trailers, Mad Max Fury Road looks pretty unmissable.

The song was ridiculous at the end IMO. Wiz Khalifa just totally ruined it. However, Charlie Puth has released his own version without Wiz's butchery in it!

Thanks but no thanks. I think I'll pass.
Exodus. Gods and kings. A lot of CGI, and a lot of stars. However, it was missing something. That ooomph that I used to get watching the old films with Victor Mature and others of that ilk. Yes the acting was overdone, and Individuals took a long time to die, but they were films you could really get Into. This film lacked that, and perhaps it was also a case of this film genre has been done to death. Quite literally. I couldn't wait for it to end to be honest. For me it gets 7/10 and that's mainly for the CGI.

I thought The Theory of Everything (I have seen it before) was quite good! It was an interesting look into the life of Professor Hawking, a life I didn't know much about before I watched it. Wonder whether he'd have given up all that intelligence for the ability to maneouvre around normally...

Fair enough, the world would be a boring place if we all liked the same stuff!

I saw it shortly after the lead had won the Oscar so got caught up in the hype I suppose, I was disappointed.

The Bourne films are great - and I don't normally like that sort of thing. (well the 3rd one's a bit weaker though still ok). Escapist entertainment but very well done.

Motorcycle Diaries is outstanding mind. Proper high art too. Superb and moving.

I'd probably like them if I could get over my irrational hatred of Matt Damon.

You're bang on about Motorcycle Diaries. Gets some dust in both my eyes every time.

...

now that's something we agree on... Matt Damon has the on screen charisma of a tea bag, and not a decent tea bag at that. His only good role was in Team America, and he was pretty much the worst thing about that film too. I did give him one last chance a few years ago when my boss convinced me that the Bourne films really were worth a watch... they weren't, And that particular boss turned out to be a complete %@#&er too.

I feel much better now.

Funnily enough I didn't think much of the Bourne film when it came out, but I recently gave it another try on the say-so of a friend, and then followed up with Bourne II - enjoyed them both, and thought they were pretty good, of their genre.

Just finished The Wind Rises - another Studio Ghibli that turned out to be not quite what I expect from a Ghibli, but I really enjoyed it. Just stunning to watch...the animation so beautifully done.

Finished Fast and Fourious.

Somewhat confusingly, it has a character from Tokyo Drift in it that shouldn't be, but Fourious takes place prior to Tokyo Drift, so that's ok.

The usual sexist leery stuff up front (GPS systems with pinup models on the screens once you set off/reach your destination) and lingering shots of cars/ladies who would catch their death of cold anywhere but the deserts where F&F takes place, before getting down to the proper business of the leads gradually learning to work together, and preposterous car based nonsense. I have to say, the preposterous car based nonsense in this installment ramps up considerably.

I also watched Tokyo Drift, in which an apparently 30 year old man goes to Japanese high school for reasons, becomes involved with the Yakuza, falls out with the Yakuza, but restores the relationship by learning to do a particular type of car racing.

I liked Fourious better.

I have never seen any of the Fast and Furious movies and to be honest i dont have any desire to.

As for Bourne,i just love them. All four movies are action packed from beginning to end.Miles better than Bond in my opinion.

It went on too long. In the end I stoop up in the cinema and shouted "Let my people go!"

I adore Victor Mature. He was so funny and self-deprecating, when someone asked if he was an actor he said "No, and I have sixty four films to prove it", but he was a good actor, consistently ham however you sliced him, and if you watch the scenes with Burton in The Robe he acquitted himself fine. His Samson with Hedy Lamarr and George Sanders was brilliant and scary and moving, maybe NSFW for biblical vengeance and some of the Special Effects aren't very special:

Tokyo Drift, and 2 Fast 2 Furious tend to be the two that are panned. I've only seen the first one and then 5 onwards when I started going to the cinema with someone who is a fan. It did introduce me to the concept of film franchises where just because it's got an ever increasing number after it, it doesn't mean it's just cashing in on an ever decreasing return (I'd been brought up on Police Academy and Freddie films).

6, with the action in London was the silliest for me when it came to stupid placed for gratuitous scantily clad women, and when the copper lets rip with an MP5 out of the car window during the car chase all of my group burst in to spontaneous laughter and could only think of the paperwork he'd just landed himself with! When 6 ended by cueing up 3 (Tokyo Drift) though, that was suddenly really clever. I hadn't realised they'd already mucked about with timings (I think chronologically they go 2, 1, 4, 5, 6, 3, 7).

They aren't high brow cinema by any stretch of the imagination, and listening to the guys on the podcast trying to make them that was also quite funny. But I think they are cleverer than people give them benefit for and if you go in expecting an action movie that jumps to conclusions and isn't afraid of dodging logic in the name of a good stunt they can be worth your time. I have slowly become a fan, having been a reluctant participant initially.
