He had four more before he got to Appaloosa!

A History of Violence, Eastern Promises, Hidalgo and Captain Alatriste. The first two are excellent, the others less so.

Dude's been in some properly awful films, particularly early in his career, but since LOTR he's been in some really interesting stuff.

Yours,
A Viggo Mortensen Nerd.

Ah, I think I was thinking of Hidalgo, that's kind of a western too right? I haven't seen A History of Violence, but Eastern Promises is a great film and especially highlighted his skills as an actor.

I also happen to think he would make an excellent villain, but he always plays the hero. As a Viggo Mortensen Nerd, do you know of any films where he's a rotten scumbag?

Off the top of my head, I don't think he's never really been an out and out dickhead. Shifty as anything in A History of Violence, and The Two Faces of January. Will have a proper think on the ride home!

Watched Greenberg again. Good movie, although Stiller doesnt quite convince. Nice performance though from Greta Gerwig and restrained stuff from Rhys Evans. Fantastic soundtrack!

Another Dario Argento horror, so a lot of over the top stuff, and rather more about atmosphere than coherence in plotting, &c. Some inventively nasty deaths, wonky special effects. I liked it, but it's no Suspiria.

Can I just say, I like the fact you have used &c.
I do that, and I think it's elegant and much preferable to etc.

The Wind Rises

Beautiful, brilliant film from the brilliant Miyazaki. Missed this at the cinema, but got it on DVD. Grown up, intelligent and gentle, a fictionalised biopic story of an aircraft designer through the early part of the 20th century including the second world war... this film about love and what drives a person to create. 8/10

You can catch many of the Ghibli films on Film 4 in the coming weeks. Mostly English dubs, which aren't always successful, but still worth catching if you've not seen them.

Word of warning about Grave of the Fireflies - it's entirely possible you will never overcome the sadness and loss you'll experience.

Also, you will never look at rocks the same again.

I love Argento, and as you said he is all about style at atmosphere. My favourite scene in Inferno is where the young woman goes swimming in the flooded cellar. The use of sounds is all that is needed to make that scene work.Wonderful stuff.

Yep - unlike Suspiria though, I found the score in Inferno kept taking me out of the moment (with a few exceptions).
