I hammered through a few last night.
Perrier's Bounty
3/10
Given the cast, it really should have been excellent man. Unfortunately, the script relied on lazy stereotypes and left gaping chasms in the plot man. It was like the director saw In Bruges and thought he'd have a crack at it man. There were some funny bits, and Brendan Gleeson's performance was typically excellent, but even he looked fed up by the end man. If you've seen it, the man thing will make sense dude, and if you've not, don't bother. Watch In fooking Bruges or The Guard instead man.
Metro Manila
7/10
A film of two halves. Initially a thoughtful insight into poverty and exploitation, followed by a low key action piece with a poignant message about sacrifice and love. It's well paced, beautifully shot and weirdly depressing yet uplifting at the same time. The central character, Oscar, is brilliant.
The Warlords
6/10
I have no idea whether this is historically accurate, but I suspect not. It felt a bit like a Chinese version of Braveheart all the way through. Apparently they paid Jet Li boatloads to be in it, and other parts of the film have obviously suffered as a result. Still, at least it's a proper piece of big budget Asian cinema that didn't involve Tom Cruise or Keanu Reeves.
