As a kid I remember being scared witless by that film. Having recently watched it again I can't help but think the demon is related to the Gruffalo.

I agree but considering it was 1957 it wasn't bad a bad effort, the rest of the film is really top notch though and makes up for this. It scared me too when I was young.

can't help thinking it wouldhave been better if the Demon hadn't been shown (a) would have been more scary, and (b) you would still be wondering if it was reql or not.

One critic/ commentator , perhaps even the director felt it qas important tht the audience does understand the demon is real, whilst the hero still doubts

terriffic film - and Niall Mcginnis is terriffic as the almost playfull wizard.

I've read this also, still I'm not that bothered about it, it's still a great film whether the demon was shown or not.

I'm going to watch Them! again pretty soon, I'm guessing that the giant ants in a 50's film won't look that great, but I remember that this was another film I really enjoyed as a kid.

After a suggestion by a friend, I'm taking another look at the Dalton Bond films. Better than I remember them, and he definitely has a rougher edge. This one in particular (he goes rogue, seeking personal revenge) looks, now, like a foreshadowing of the Daniel Craig Bonds.

Timothy Dalton is also fun to watch, especially those moments his northern accent breaks through.

I think Timothy Dalton was unfairly criticised by media and JB fans alike. He had, as you said, a rougher edge to him, and portrayed the character of JB well, IMO.

Much better than Pierce Brosnan, Licence To Kill is better than any Brosnan film, and he should have been give a few more films at least.

I like the Dalton films, he plays Bond in a colder and more menacing fashion.

Watched a couple of Chinese films in the last couple of weeks; Once Upon a Time in Shanghai - good kung fu caper, Icemen - unfrozen warriors in modern day Hong Kong nonsense, The Monkey King - ridiculous fantasy stuff.

Also watched Come il Vento, fairly depressing film about a prison governor in Italy who's partner is killed, it then follows the next 20 miserable years. Don't watch it if you feel depressed, don't watch if you're in a good mood.

Coherence - "On the night of an astronomical anomaly, eight friends at a dinner party experience a troubling chain of reality bending events. Part cerebral sci-fi and part relationship drama, Coherence is a tightly focused, intimately shot film that quickly ratchets up with tension and mystery."

One camera,a cast of eight, no CGI and 95% filmed on the one set... mixed in with a large dose of quantum mechanics. It's one on of those rare films that is purely driven by the superb script and acting.

Very similar to the excellent 'Man from Earth' - if you've seen that, you'll know what I mean

The Adventures of Robin Hood - "Dashing" Errol Flynn as Robin with Basil Rathbone and Claude Rains as the baddies.

James Cagney was apparently lined up to be Robin Hood which might have made it even more fun.

American Beauty. Remembered as a very good film, now upgraded to arguable masterpiece. Kevin Spacey after he slips the leash is just untouchable.

I watched it again last night too. Even better than I rembered and as you Spacey is just fantastic. Mind you, Annette Bening is really good too.

Rio Grande - A John Wayne western, not terrible, but did they really have so much singing in the cavalry? Also, slightly comically undercranked whenever the horses are onscreen.

The Thing (2011). Went into this fully expecting it to be dreadful (first trailer on the disc is for bloody Battleship, after all) but it's not so bad. Creature design is good, I could have done with a little more ambiguity (especially in some key scenes towards the end). Finishing with the music & opening from the 1982 film was, I think, a mistake, it just reminded me of how much I like that film. Not awful, and I reckon, if you liked the original, you'll get something from it. If you want a stand alone creature feature, there's better out there.

Retreat. A decent, fairly low key psychological thriller.
