I like a bit of science fiction and am currently reading 'The Mote in God's Eye' which is a highly regarded first contact story. In fact Robert A. Heinlein described it as "possibly the finest science fiction novel I have ever read".

Must say, I'm really enjoying it so far.

I think I love my Kindle even more than my bike, to the extent that I find myself less and less inclined to read a paper book nowadays.

"His wife ignored him."

Last night in the pub this page had me laughing out loud. Unusually, I still found it funny after I sobered up. It should be required reading with Valentines just around the corner...

'Inside Alcatraz' by Jim Quillen. Great 'inside story' of the place that I've found hard to put down. When I've finished it (about 20 pages to go) I'm going to read 'A Few Kind Words & A Loaded Gun' by Razor Smith again. Must have done that cover-to-cover probably 7 times now and it's still an absolutely blinding read, very highly recommended.

Just finished the Bruce Springsteen biography which was excellent.

Now started A Brief History Of Seven Killings by Marlon James(picked up at a local charity shop for 99p).

Re-reading 'Snuff' in break-time, at work (the Pratchett novel)
Apart from Thursdays, when I pick up Cycling Weekly on the way on

That said, today, I did acquire these, from one of the out-patient clinics

Just finished Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid - Bill Bryson. Took a while to get into, but once I did very enjoyable read of a disappeared period.
Started Mother Tongue - English and How It Got that Way - Bill Bryson, at the same time as Thunderbolt Kid, but that has a lot of information coming at you on every page, so need a break from it just try to absorb what you are being told.
Just started Soul Music by Terry Pratchet as my new Mother Tongue break book, although having read many of the Discworld series, I can settle into it like being wrapped in a warm blanket.

Finished Seveneves - I love the world created, but the story seems to grind to a juddering halt every so often for an exposition dump. Necessary, but not done as nicely as it is in some other hard sci fi (imo). The stories either side of that stuff make up for it though.

Moved on to "Osama" by Lavie Tidhar - really interesting idea, and almost the opposite of the above, in that Tidhar trusts the reader to figure out what's going on (at least, so far - my app tells me I'm 75% through).

Also reading "Fool Moon" (the second book in the Dresden Files, by Jim Butcher). Rattles along at a decent pace, and I'm nearing the big reveal - it reads a little old fashioned to me, but is a page turner.
