Ride It Like You Stole It!

Having climbed a big hill and having a very fast descent to come - has to be cars getting in the way on the way down. Cat & Fiddle into Buxton has to be a prime example. Long climb out of Macc (it's not great coming down that side) and you'll get passed by a few cars just before the descent starts, get upto speed, and you'll find you are sweeping round the bends much faster than they can....booooo

Having had more time time (on my ride in this morning) to think about it ...

My own Stupidity!

For example setting out on a long ride and forgetting to bring my wallet. Or worse, realising 2 miles out I've forgotten it and not bothering to go back to get it, then getting stuck in a headwind on the way back and not able to stop off at the pub/cafe for a coffee & refuel because I have no money. I must remember to hide a fiver behind the bar end plug for that eventuality.

Another example - forgetting to bring my U-lock so can't stop anywhere without getting paranoid about someone half-inching my bike (or having to buy another lock which I don't need).

1) people who shout abuse
2) disrespectful drivers who dont yield to my right of way
3) pedestrians who think cyclists should give way to them

and the one thing i really hate... riders who are faster than me!

Minor mechanicals.

The ones that don't affect the overall ride, but they let you know that you and your bike are not 100% - e.g. a 5% drop in PSI on the front tyre. Not a huge issue, but it's there in the back of my mind and I will constantly think about it until I get home and can top it up.

I have learned to live with the wind and regard it as a way to improve riding and fitness, potholes and bumpy roads on the other hand make me want to give up.

On 2nd thoughts I have to admit that most of the above (poor road surfaces, dodgy drivers, cars slowing you down on descents & the occasional head wind - 110 miles of it on last years Skeggy 300k) does annoy me at times

I think it has to be punctures for me. I have never been that good at fixing them, especially by the roadside so I always carry a couple of spare tubes with me to swap in and then patch up the old ones at home if they are not too bad.

However this saturday, my first big ride in about 2 years, I head off from Sawston hoping to go to Saffron walden. I must have missed a turning somewhere as I realise that I am just climbing up in to Bishops Stortford (21 miles instead of the 9 that I had planned). Just as I crown the climb I get a puncture, no problem I think and slip a fresh tube in and go on my merry way. I have a bit of a look around in Bishops Stortford and then decide I may as well start heading home. About 4 miles out I get another puncture, drat, on goes my final tube and I go on my way again. Less than half a mile and my back wheel gets one this time.

No worries I think to myself as I remembered seeing a cycle shop in Newport on the way through, decided to walk there and get some new tubes and maybe a bite to eat if I could find something tasty. After walking what felt like forever I get in to Newport to find the shop closed and the village practically deserted, fantastic, at this point I had to make a mercy call and beg for a lift home. Not the way I imagined my first trip on my new toy to work out

On the brightside went out yesterday on a nice 30 miler with some friends and managed to avoid any at all, fingers crossed my luck is changing

Dog walkers on shared paths that only when ur close to them you realise the dog is on an extendable lead which is from one side of the path to the other.

Wind, definitely. And I mean the weather variety not the personal kind......

And traffic lights at the bottom of a certain nice hill, so you go hurtling down, ready to keep the momentum going, and the lights change.....

Or car drivers at traffic lights who take forever to pull away, so that any momentum you do have coming up to the lights is gone and you're forced to a quick stop before you hit the back of the car.

Other than that, my own lack of fitness annoys me on rides!
