As above..

I rented a small flat many years ago..
It had a card meter,i thought it rather expensive, i later found out i was paying off the owners 400 quid unpaid leccy..

I suspect you will be fine if its in the contract But evidence can be priceless when dealing with utilities

We always insisted on a meter reading by someone in "authority" whenever going into a new property

When in Quarters it would be the guy handing over the property, or when renting it was the Landlord.

When we bought our house, it was the Estate Agent selling the property when the keys were handed over.

Then a letter to the provider with a copy of the statement and a request for a formal edging or record of the starting figures.

That's odd. Do they wear asbestos underpants?

Arsebestos surely?

On a serious note(!) You'd like to think they'd make decent security provision for those that have had to leave property there.
If that's the case here I could understand why Accy is concerned. It'll be common knowledge that the building is unoccupied, and Johnny Lightfingers and his chums will soon be sniffing around.

That's my thought as well. It'll be common knowledge now that the building is empty. Especially with the local paper broadcasting it. If they can get into the building then they'll get into the flats easily as most like mine, just had a cheapo Yale lock on the flimsy door. Some paid for mortice locks. I was going to have one put on my door when i moved in but the landlord said don't bother as we're putting new doors on in a fortnight. That was in April!

Wouldn't surprise me if some of the larger business units had sprinklers?
According to the fire service. The sprinkler system was old and unreliable. I think my only way out in the event of a fire would've been to jump from the front window and probably break my hip AGAIN. The bedroom window as shown in the local paper's pic' was an almost certain death jump.

The new flat is in local authority sheltered accommodation,so there wont be any fire and safety issues. I noticed the other day when i had a look round that all the alarms are checked every month and there are fire extinguishers here and there. The old place didn't have fire extinguishers. Maybe the landlord provided them but someone nicked them?

I suppose that either would be difficult to explain to the insurers.......... or can booby traps be added as "named items"?
Surely my insurance would be cheaper if i proved that i'd taken adequate measures to deter burglars? Naturally i'd have to put a Warning!! Booby Traps In Operation!! sign on my door to cover myself.
