I have it sat on my bedside table. Don’t know if I can face it... maybe I’ll wait until France so you boys can help with the long words

We’ll school ya:okay:

France should be ace too to be fair. Even if I’ll have to endure watching the three B’s dump me every time we reach a climb!

Don’t you mean the 3 Amigos!
Anyway, enough of that Tommy. If you can’t keep up with, if not lead, 3 crumbling lump ridden old codgers up a few mountains then, well.....you best prepare to have the piss taken out of you proper :okay:^_^

Not by me of course ;)

Off topic but one of the guys I work with did his clubs 8 mile TT the other day. Now he is the skinny sort and only 25 years old. He did it in 17:42, or 27.8mph average, a flat course so about 260ft ascent. I can't recall his power exactly but it was approx 380w. I don't think he is doing the Cambridge ride, although I'm sure he wouldn't have worried @LBHIFI

It does make you sick these youngsters/naturally talented can bang out silly speeds. Our fast guy did 17.03 for 7.7 miles, some 27 mph average. Most of us last night struggle to get sub 21 minutes. just a few broke the 20mins. God we must be crap at TT

I always hope people will take the piss a little. It makes me feel less guilty for doing likewise! ^_^

I’d be very surprised if I trouble you guys going up hill though. Honestly. You may of noticed from my strava how little mileage I’ve put in this year. It’s not through not wanting to. I’m going to try and up it slowly over the next few weeks, but I’m getting the sense this year might be a little bit of a right off unless things suddenly reverse.

This thing with my knee happened very suddenly. So the optimist in me is hoping it buggers off just as suddenly. But it’s dragging on a bit now...

Sorry to hear that Tommy. Rest not helped? Physio? If it’s lingering then get it an mri a bit quicker than I managed.

Cheers mate. I thought resting had helped. But cycling this week and the dull ache has returned. Less than at it’s worse but maybe that’s relative to the fact I’ve had a period of rest. And could get worse again if I up the effort level. The knee feels very weak generally compared to the other one. Frail I suppose is the word. The pain isn’t bad at all relative to knocks I’ve taken in the past but it leaves me wondering what’s behind it.

I’ll try to do a couple more rides over the weekend because I’m still hanging on to the fact I’m out of condition generally. But it’s probanly a trip to the doctors next week. I think it’s better to do that first before going to the sports therapist.

Agree about going to doc first. Though mine sent me to a sports physio ...twice, a year apart:angry:

dont muck about with a capital f with your knee !get it looked at asap as they dont seem to get better on their own and they bloody well hurt when they rebel from neglect !

What he said. And, of course, his knee is not as bad as mine:whistle::biggrin:

Don't do it Carl! Even the broom wagon has a home to go to! The course is different....but not that different. The majority of it is the same. Do you not remember the 3 - 4 mile steady climbs? That is a LONG way to push a bike...especially in cleats. You will also miss out on the evenings festivities and merriment, if you are still grinding your way home in the dipped beams of the, by now, suicidal broom wagon....with the burnt out clutch!

You are now a competent rider of considerably improved fitness since your last attempt. If you want a new challenge....ride it with me this year, and watch me crumble, as you smash it.....OR....do it on your SS and give me the pleasure of relentlessly taking the piss for the first few miles, and at the first food stop...if I can be arsed to wait.
Noted .... but may not listen  Will really depend how my trial runs go and if I can get up any hills. If I do go with the SS, and it gets to a stage where the Broom Wagon wants to go home, I'll have to get a lift back to base off them.

Life is about regrets ... and we rarely regret things we do, we most often regret things we don't do. I'd rather attempt it and fail, than not attempt it, go with the geared bike and complete the ride easily, then regret not trying the SS. I just need to know that I have a chance of finishing but I won't know that until I do the local hilly routes and feel comfortable on the rolling roads. Final decision won't be made until the week of the ride :okay:

Agreed about going to the doctor ASAP. I was just giving it a little time to see if it was something muscle rather than joint related.

There’s loads of therapy type places around here so that’s all good. But I’d like to know what the problem is really. Obviously doing the job I do it’s important to try and avoid aggravating something that would then stop me being able to work. It’s very possible that it is a work related issue. I try to be careful what I kneel on but anyone who does a physical job will tell you that they take liberties from time to time. And it is the left knee I generally kneel on so...

All very annoying... but I know I’m preaching to the choir!
But basically I cycle to increase my well being not to it’s detriment. So I may have to make peace with the fact I’ll have Bob’s best smug grin to deal with when I trail in last at the top of the col du tourmalet!

I think it’ll be easier for you on the SS this year than it was on your geared bike last year.
Taking into account that you now know you have asthma, you’re doing the medium course. You’re fitter of course. And you’ve accepted that you’ll walk up the steeper hills. It’s more just a question of which gear ratio you’re happy with for the flatter sections that will get you up the smaller gradients I think.
It’s still bloody brutal though! ^_^
