I blocked all your numbers, and changed my text notification alert....it was doing my head in!

Just kidding, thankyou for thinking of me. I might even now consider throwing my ripped, broken zip, sweat stained only other cycling jersey in the bin....maybe not!

Is the design available for viewing, or is it a surprise?

Here you go mate - yours will have "Adski" on the back instead of "Cyclechat " though:

Looks like there can't be a bet then, as I'd already said that I'd signed up to do the shorter course with the others, would walking up hills if the gearing stopped me getting up and i'll do it on the SS if the local practice runs don't go too badly.

Reason for attempting it on the DD is I guess the same reason as others have for attempting things that few people have done before ..... because it's a challenge. I could challenge myself to beat last year's time (but it's a different route so that wouldn't work). Or I could challenge myself to get around without walking the hills (I'm a realist and don't believe I can get up the 20%+ gradients without walking even on a geared bike - not only would I fail this challenge, but I'd be failing something many others on the day would be succeeding in). Or I could get a recumbent bike and do it on that (mmmm, tempting for next year!). But instead I've gone with the possibility of the SS.

The calculations and logic are pretty sound. The gearing of 42/16 should give me an average speed of 14.5 mph at cadence of 70 and 12.4 mph at cadence of 60. I'll be grinding up hills and freewheeling down the other side so I should be able to hit an average cadence of 60 I would think.

Ride starts at 8am and i aim to finish by 5 like last year - with 1 hour set aside for rests, this requires an average of 12.5 mph over the moving day - not too unrealistic.

As the day goes on I will get tired and the cadence will drop so I need to use the rests well. Last year we had that long stop at the cafe for about 30+ mins, this year I won't do that but instead use that time for shorter snack breaks of 10 minutes or so. This should help the legs stay warm and give me more frequent stops.

Doesn't logic on paper look so simple  But it is this logic why I know I can complete the course on a SS if that's what I decide to do :okay:

I still expect to finish last, and have the company of the broom wagon for most of the course, but think about the feeling of crossing the line having ridden all that way in just one gear :hyper:

Don't do it Carl! Even the broom wagon has a home to go to! The course is different....but not that different. The majority of it is the same. Do you not remember the 3 - 4 mile steady climbs? That is a LONG way to push a bike...especially in cleats. You will also miss out on the evenings festivities and merriment, if you are still grinding your way home in the dipped beams of the, by now, suicidal broom wagon....with the burnt out clutch!

You are now a competent rider of considerably improved fitness since your last attempt. If you want a new challenge....ride it with me this year, and watch me crumble, as you smash it.....OR....do it on your SS and give me the pleasure of relentlessly taking the piss for the first few miles, and at the first food stop...if I can be arsed to wait.

Nah, great book though-lays bare the collapse in the criminal, justice system. Grim reading.

I have it sat on my bedside table. Don’t know if I can face it... maybe I’ll wait until France so you boys can help with the long words

I plan on getting in early Saturday. The Ride into Peterborough is only 43 miles so I'll leave early and hope to see you then.
I just read up about the TT event. 800 signed up for the event . That is great news as it probably means that it will be a bit easier to qualify . Now I just need a completely windless race day so that the rear-disc-wheel-guys will have less of an advantage (I'm bringing a normal rear wheel).
Of course, with that many participants, we can't just choose our own start time. From the info I could gather I think I will start sometime between 12 - 12:30, but I will know for sure about 2 weeks before the event.
Anyway, if you don't find me the 2nd, I will be looking out for you guys the 3rd.

OMG....I'm getting excited about the DD.....how bloody weird is that? I'm sure it will have abated by mile 4......

It is amazing how the human brain has the capacity to forget pain. As you say, the first hill is probably about 4 feet after the start line so that’ll be the abrupt end of your temporary amnesia!

Seriously though... I am gutted I won’t be joining you this year. I hope the weather stays good for you guys. The memory of last year will stay with me for a long time. Which is surprising considering how doped up I was!...

France should be ace too to be fair. Even if I’ll have to endure watching the three B’s dump me every time we reach a climb!

I signed up for the Chrono TT the day before. Not really shure about start times, but I think I decide myself. Think there are turbos available where you warm up and then just queue up for start when you feel like it.

I'm relieved i'm not doing the TT. I had my first outdoor ride in the UK since September. I've got burnt lung cough now. It was cold for our local 7TT. I had few panicky niggles, seat titled forward whilst warming up, selected inner ring to spin legs and then couldn't get big ring afterwards( manually forced). A quick shout round got the seat done a minute before my start. Reasonably pleased with my time because it put me right in the mix of my age group of riders and quicker(small amount) than some chaps Iv'e never beaten before. More tweeking of position, remembering not to go too hard early, cadence work.

Off topic but one of the guys I work with did his clubs 8 mile TT the other day. Now he is the skinny sort and only 25 years old. He did it in 17:42, or 27.8mph average, a flat course so about 260ft ascent. I can't recall his power exactly but it was approx 380w. I don't think he is doing the Cambridge ride, although I'm sure he wouldn't have worried @LBHIFI
