I think carl’s determined to use the single speed for a meet up at some point. The trouble is Carl I just think unless you / we can pick a route where whatever the gradient it only changes by a few % it’s going to be tough. I’m always up for a trip to Holland though!

I have just paced Carl up Alp in Zwift. He seemed alright though he might have been swearing at me when I was telling him to “ come on! Dig deep”
Still, a PB for Carl:okay:

Or you leave me and i meet you at the end  Now i have the Bolt i can put the route in and you guys don't have to wait for me at every junction. And i can always throw a tow rope around @theboxers waist and he can drag me up the hills with his e-bike :okay:

I'm definitely thinking about the SS for ToC next year. The SS is made for a flat course like that. Maybe set myself a target of 16-17 mph .... :training:

ha ha, yes, my language was a little blue, but i really appreciated the company and encouragement. Average 242 watts on the climb for 66 minutes. As @CXRAndy says, not too shabby for a flabby  If I can lose most of this 15 kg fat and hold the power I'll be setting more PBs over the next 12 months :wahhey: Just need to hide the cakes and biscuits :mrpig:

Oh yeah, and I have a TRON bike woo hoo :wahhey::wahhey:

I don't know Somerset all that well, but it has levels which are flat.

Something like this might be ok, and if we go east towards Shepton mallet then we could pop into the Rapha shop

The Somerset Levels are indeed, level. Been bird watching there but can't say I know the area that well. @bridgy lives in Cheddar, just north of this route, so will probably know the area for riding around. If the choice is a lumpy ride I'll bring the Boardman, if mostly flat I may bring the SS as I love riding that bike and, as I say, now I have a bolt and can put the route in, I won't be slowing anyone else down.

The bottom part of the chart shows my gear shifts relative to the gradient

You’ll grind at the start, be ok in the middle, and die a death at the end! But you’ll survive (probably) ^_^

Wasn't there a national level hill climber that used to run a single speed recently

Single speed is fine on any gradient. So long as the gradient is pretty consistent. In fact on a hill climb event running one cog is a way of saving weight.

The middle graph, showing gears, is that gear inches in numbers? My SS is 69 gear inches, so assuming the numbers relate to that then you never went as low as my gear! Or is it showing cadence?

How much total mtrs did you climb on the ride?

Well done Carl on your Tron, I've got 8k ft. It will wait till winter to finish those extra ft.

I can tell you from first hand experience, the effort(HR/power) to climb Zwift's Alp is comparable to the real Alp DHuez. The only difference is speed, therefore time. Zwift is a little optimistic with it calc. Well it is for me. My Zwift time 1hr3, real D'Huez 1hr30. The fastest guy last week did it in 1hr6 in our group an he is a decent climber(Lee type)

Alberto who is the owner of Tenerife bike Training, is a young and very quick light rider finished in the top150 of the Marmotte Yesterday. He climbed the DHuez in just under the hour with a on below. S.Hurley, who weighs less than Lee is also a fantastic climber Screenshot_20180709-074033_Strava.jpg

Morning Whorty

254 (gear changes in total)

50x15 (most used gear. It should actually be 52t front chainring but I’ve never changed it on computer)

18 (front derailleur shifts

236 (rear derailleur shifts)

Total climbing 1500ft. Probably more pertininent is the gradient of climbs. What may balance the flats and the hills out a little next year for you is that generally the flat lands (the fens) can get very gusty.

Morning Mr Tommy

To be honest, doesn't sound too bad. The other Friday I did a local ride with 579 mtrs (1900 ft) of ascent over 45km (28 miles) with ave speed of 15 mph on the SS. So more climbing than the ToC in 1/3 of the mileage. Obviously didn't have the winds that are a potential in the fens, but equally didn't have anyone to draft. Steepest sections were 7-8% (I think there was a short 10% section into Wincanton High Street).

My gearing is 42/16 so well below your 52/15 (by some margin). I won't be fast but with that gearing should be quite straightforward. Depending how much weight I lose by then I might even up the gearing to 42/15 or 42/14 (flip flop hub so I can keep the lower gear too and turn the wheel around during the ride if I need to).

Cheers @CXRAndy ..... I'm under no illusion that I could climb the real thing in anywhere near my Zwift (or Bkool) time. If nothing else, I wouldn't have Bob shouting abuse (sorry encouragement) to me all the way up  Plus I don't go anywhere near the red in real life compared to Zwift - on Zwift I can always get off and finish the ride, in the real world I always need enough energy to get myself back home :heat:

Yeah you’ll survive it mate. There’ll probably be others doing it SS too. Like I said earlier, you’ll grind the hills at the start, spin on the flat hopefully, and die a little at the end! But you’ll be fine.

It’ll be a bit of a lonely day though, unless you’re prepared to wait for Andy
