Summer trip with Bob’s mates to somewhere in Europe with hilly bits

realistically i think i should only pick 2 out of the 3 going abroad due to cost and possible hostilities at home if i go for the hat trick

Sorry, I became quite confused by info on their website. I am also leaning towards the sportive. It would be more fun to start and ride together as a CC team, for a bit at least, than ride alone for a fleetingly small chance of qualification. I will have a look at what time Sunday would have secured qualification under the new rules and try and calculate power/speed needed over 100 mike course and then make a sensible decision.

Bob, I calculated that 3.14 would have been needed in our age category. Of course with the new rules, it is likely to need to be faster.

If you ride the sportive in 2019, you cannot qualify - only the 200 in the race and the Gran Fondo stand a chance of getting 1 of the 50 places.

Martin I think you're possibly safe on speed
This is from the Grand Fondo advice page,

  1. Entrants in the Gran Fondo will select their anticipated average speed for the start gate. All riders must stay ahead of the PACE CAR to stay within the road closures The PACE CAR will start at its journey at 12.00hrs and travel at 13mph.

The chrono event sold out in minutes
Even I can beat 13 mph!

I was just looking and hadn't realised quite how close you and Bob were to qualifying in your age category - only 5-7 places and about 3 minutes! I'm sure if the setup was the same next year with the knowledge you've gained from this ride you'd both have had a very good shot at qualifying next year. That's not to say you wouldn't also have an equally good chance next year - if the ratio of qualifiers from the race and the Gran Fondo end up the same, your relative finishing position (albeit from a smaller field of riders) would need to be about the same - within the top 20%. The longer route next year throws in an extra unknown as well though - hard to know if it will play to your advantage or not!

I was much further from qualification in my age group, so although I know there's room for improvement I'm also realistic enough to know I'm unlikely to improve enough to qualify so it would be a shame to deny someone else with more chance one of the 100 places as much as anything. If I were you or Bob though I might be tempted....!

It would require an honest appraisal of prospects and some commitment given longer route and reduced number of qualifiers.
I spoke to a guy from Vc Colets in our age group who qualified at 3-14. He had been specifically training for the event for months. Astonishingly, he rode a gentle 200km the day before the event to keep the legs and body loose:ohmy:

You only missed out by 161 seconds (2 seconds per mile)

Edit: obviously very similar for Martin!

It is a shame they’ve divided it into sportive and grand fondo. Not just because of the prospect of qualifiying for something else that was on offer, but because it splits the field more.

Next year I’ll be applying for the sportive. It should still be pretty quick for a century. Closed roads etc.

But I’m not sure realistically we can aim for a team effort. I’d hope for one. But slowing for other people or expecting others to slow for you isn’t really how it panned out. It was brilliant riding most of the day with Bridgy, and I’d envisaged there being more of us in a group. But I dont think you can plan for it.

So if other guys think they’ve got even half a chance of qualifying and they want to, then go for it.

I agree. The reality on the road was with so many other riders around it was really hard to monitor where the other "Chaingang" guys were if they were behind you. A quick glance behind and you struggle to pick anyone out amongst the crowd, and you don't want to take your eyes of where you're going for long or you're asking for trouble! For this ride, on closed roads I really enjoyed the opportunity to ride fast in a group. Everyone can ride it in whatever way they like though - may well be some groups of us that stick together, unlikely that we all will though.

I imagine I'd be interested in a spring trip out to Majorca. I may even be able to get us all use of a good mate's villa (in Port de Pollensa) if he has finalised the purchase by then.....I'll keep you posted.
