True, they weren't particularly long, just enough to get a gap and with lots of riders forming packs over the crest, it was extremely difficult if not impossible to bridge the gap, so you had to join another group, this could lead to greater time gaps.

This happened to me with Martin, he got in a group in front of me, I got into a bigger group behind and over the next 5 mins my group paced back upto his forming a nice large group. Next year-more hills
^_^

I’d like to find the segment where I got dropped off the back and had to clamber back on, just to see for sure the watts I was putting out. It’s incredible the release your legs get when you make it back and start to get sucked along again. I think if I’d of been out in the ‘wind’ another few seconds I’d of watched Paul disappear over the horizon.

Looks like it is a total of 200 per age group in next year's ToC which will mean only 50 qualifiers per age group. I still plan to give it a go - aim to get my best 100 mile time and an outside, outside, outside chance of qualifying. Did I mention is was a very outside chance? And I mean outside

Entries available to compete for qualification at the UCI Gran Fondo World Championships in 2019 has been restricted to just 200 places per age group at ToC next year.

The Race Gate entries available has been reduced to just 100 per age group classification and many of the age groups have nearly sold out already!

Have you managed to get an early bird race place?

My reading of it is that you'd have to get one of the 100 places available in either the race or the Gran Fondo - with the Sportive being a separate event next year. I think I'll just enter the Sportive myself

It's a bit confusing. This year there were just two options - the race and the Gran Fondo/sportive, and in theory you could qualify for the UCI Gran Fondo World championships through either. Next year it looks like there will be the race, plus a UCI qualifying Gran Fondo - both limited to 100 entries per age category, and then also the Sportive. It's not clear whether the entrants to the Gran Fondo will start separately from the Sportive.

I don't want the pressure of doing the actual race (not good enough either!) and with the limited places I think the Gran Fondo will be be much like a proper race too to be honest. I also think that places will be snapped up pretty quickly and it might be unlikely we'll all get a place.

Personally I think I will just do the Sportive and do the best I can - I don't think I will have any chance of UCI qualifying based on the new rules anyway

I think if we all go ToC 100 we could get a really good CC turn out. Might even tempt @theboxers out on a real ride, and @Jim Brown down from the frozen North.
