Isn't the sportive just what the mellow velo was this year?

It is in the sense that there’s no carrot in terms of qualification so it is just a sportive.

But it’s 100 miles where the mellow velo was 54 I think. And the closed roads and flat course mean it’ll still be quick so I think you’ll still get a similar atmosphere to this year in general.

Not exactly I don't think - it says that the Sportive will be split into different speed starting pens like this years gran Fondo was, which I don't think was the case for the Mellow velo?

Basically the gran Fondo next year will be JUST for those wanting to qualify for the world champ gran Fondo - but only the top 50 out of the 200 in each age group across both the race and the gran Fondo will qualify (in theory all 50 could come from the race). So the sportive next year will be more like the mass participation event we did - just without the carrot of possible qualification to the UCI worlds

I've not really looked into next year's events. There seems to be alot of confusion presently

Possibles for me next year so far:

Early year trip (late feb to may) either Tenerife of Mallorca

Mallorca 312

Cambridge 100

London 100

Double devil

Summer trip with dean maybe to the alps

Summer trip with Bob’s mates to somewhere in Europe with hilly bits

Cyclechat social rides at a more inclusive pace for all like IOW was last summer.

I’ll always be doing other rides too if you guys are interested but I thought I’d put these out there to see if anyone else fancies the look of it as a rough schedule.

Maybe copy paste the list and put your name to things you like the sound of.

Have you managed to get an early bird race place?

No, I haven't applied for a race place and the Gran Fondo doesn't open until next Monday.

I quite fancy the Gran Fondo, even though it would take a miracle for me to qualify, but if everyone wants to do the Sportive instead, I'm probably up for that. Need to decide by this Sunday night - as the Fondo places open at 7am on Monday

Martin I think you're possibly safe on speed
This is from the Grand Fondo advice page,

  1. Entrants in the Gran Fondo will select their anticipated average speed for the start gate. All riders must stay ahead of the PACE CAR to stay within the road closures The PACE CAR will start at its journey at 12.00hrs and travel at 13mph.

The chrono event sold out in minutes

Sorry, I became quite confused by info on their website. I am also leaning towards the sportive. It would be more fun to start and ride together as a CC team, for a bit at least, than ride alone for a fleetingly small chance of qualification. I will have a look at what time Sunday would have secured qualification under the new rules and try and calculate power/speed needed over 100 mike course and then make a sensible decision.

If you're not utterly serious about qualifying, then sportive would be the better option. A decision would then be, are we riding as a pack or individuals going for a time? If its the latter then the grand-fondo is the obvious selection.
Sportive, relaxed day in the saddle no time issues, just creating a group ride where we all stay together and carry each other to the end-GoPro recording obligatory ^_^

Early season Mallorca
DD for me if doesn’t conflict with ToC
An inclusive social ride would be great.
Other than that lots of mountains perhaps
A Haute of some sort or a long weekend to have a go at the cingles

i would like to try the toc sportive but would definitely try to take advantage of closed roads and do the best i can , though not interested in trying to qualify for anything else ( well would have been 10 yrs ago but being realistic )
would love to do DD again
if we don't kill each other this time up the mountains and i am allowed to , i wouldn't mind tagging along with a trip to the alps next year
cc meet up - always - whether a hard fred whitton , a scenic scotland ( could also be hard depending on route ) or south somewhere
and of course - all piling round Andy's new gaff for a cup of tea ^_^

@berty bassett ( depending how we get on / if enough of us go )

realistically i think i should only pick 2 out of the 3 going abroad due to cost and possible hostilities at home if i go for the hat trick
