Still on Supermarkets. Our Local Waitrose has Self Service tills that presume their customers aren't dishonest. I can put my open rucksack on the floor next to the till, scan my items and place them directly into it without any " Please place item in the bagging area "
The Aldi ones weigh what you had on one side then what you have on the other after scanning so that wouldn't work.

Problem with most self serve tills
I put the scanned items on the bagging area. Pay and then pack them into my rucksack next to the bagging area rather than putting the rucksack on it.

I do this with my big shop as well. For some reason it doens't like the weight of 3 bags for life, so in order to avoid it I just place all my loose scanned items onto the bagging area and then pack into bags once I've paid. You do sometimes get an annoying prompt to "please remove your shopping" but at least I don't have to wait for a member of staff
I always forget to do it that way!

I shop once a week, for the two of us, so a small trolley load. Local Sainsburys recently updated their self serve tills - some now for trolley use. Items can be scanned direct from trolley, then placed in bagging area. From there I replace the items in the trolley, wheel them to the car and place items in plastic crates carried specifically for the purpose. On return crates taken indoors and unpacked in the kitchen. No need for any of this 'bagging' malarkey. Waste of time.

I avoided the problem by getting serious about recycling...

It is 14 months later and the bin is still less than 3/4 full. If I am careful it might not need emptying in 2024 either!

Someone else who does this. We are down to 3 times a year, although a good chunk of that is cat litter.

Recycling wheelie bin is about twice a year, mainly due to trying to avoid too much plastic.

Paper and card? A lot more.

Supermarkets.

Usually ladies of a certain age.
All their stuff whizzing through the check out.
Struggle to find the right shopping bag
Dither over which one they now need to buy
Eventually all packed up into their bags. Then adjust all their hair, pockets, tap down, check lipstick.

Sudden revelation that they need to pay.
Scurry for cards or grapple with their phones then eventually pay.

How did these people survive so long?

All these are why I always use the scan and shop in Tesco - just get it off the shelf, scan it and put it in a bag which is already in the trolley

when it is all in the bags then go to the "till" scan the code on the till - tap yes a couple of times, pay and go back to the car
bags in car and go home

far less hassle and time based stress at the end of the trip

I really must try that, I have the app that lets you use your phone, both for Tesco and Waitrose. Will wait until the New Year and a quiet time to get familiar with the system.

The apps depend on in store mobile coverage not having have any blind spots. I tried to use Sainsbury's with their in store wifi and gave up. Do use their hand scanners but even then there are a couple of rows where you need to walk away from where the goods are to get it to scan them. Sainsbury's do give cheaper prices for using them.

Stafford Sainsbury's has similar "dead spots" but Mrs O is now proficient at moving until her signal returns. Overall the app is a positive experience
