You can go south from Tod on the canal?
Yes. I used to go to/come back from Littleborough on it which is about 9 km each way. There are various road/off-road options from Littleborough. The canal itself continues into Rochdale and beyond but I usually avoid going that far into the more built-up areas.

...Black Hill...

I like that road. It wont be long before I get my best bike out of hibernation and head out that way again. We will have to organise a forum ride out there this year!

Another failure for me. Just to much wind early in the week, then no chance to ride Thursday & Friday, so only got out yesterday and today.

I think I'd better drop out of this challenge, I'm almost certain to fail at least one week in May, possibly more.
That's a shame, but why not continue, see what your total is for this year, then try to match or beat it next year?

Week 16 (17th April to 23rd April)

302km cycled this week (year to date = 3580km)

All five bikes have now passed 500km in 2023 – and two of them have passed 900km .. La Rossa and the MASSI keep leapfrogging each other in their quest to get to 1000km first: La Rossa is on 921km and the MASSI is breathing down her neck on 919km. It’ll be close but my money’s on La Rossa…but it depends on the weather over the next week or so.

All five bikes have done 100km this month .. I’ve now succeeded in doing this in 9 out of the last 10 months – the exception being December 2022 .. I’m not sure I’ll ever manage to achieve it in a December …

19 rides this week over 30 mins:

Week 16 – ride 1 (Mon) – 36 mins – Pontmenard loop: on the MASSI
Week 16 – ride 2 (Mon) – 1 hr 8 mins – Raserais, Esquiniac, Bourg Neuf and la Faux: on the Princess
Week 16 – ride 3 (Mon) – 2 hrs 53 mins – SBdM, Brignac, la Cotinaie, Ménéac, Ménéac quarry, Landual, St Yger, la Ville Durand, le Villot, la Riaye, Brignac, Kerminy, la Plaisance and SBdM: on La Rossa
Week 16 – ride 4 (Tues) – 1 hr 14 mins – Plaisance, Geffray and le Faux: on the Urban Shaper
Week 16 – ride 5 (Tues) – 35 mins – local lanes: also on the Urban Shaper
Week 16 – ride 6 (Wed) – 46 mins – local lanes: still on the Urban Shaper
Week 16 – ride 7 (Wed) – 42 mins – a Devison loop: on the MASSI
Week 16 – ride 8 (Wed) – 51 mins – Haligan, Bourrien and Justice: also on the MASSI
Week 16 – ride 9 (Thurs) – 35 mins – Pontmenard loop: on the Urban Shaper
Week 16 – ride 10 (Thurs) – 40 mins – Raserais and Esquiniac: also on the Urban Shaper
Week 16 – ride 11 (Thurs) – 1 hr 1 min – Villedieu, Pont de Rox, Plaisance and SBdM: on La Rossa
Week 16 – ride 12 (Fri) – 49 mins – Raserais and Esquiniac: on the Princess
Week 16 – ride 13 (Fri) – 1 hr 5 mins – SBdM, Evriguet and Kerminy: on the Princess
Week 16 – ride 14 (Fri) – 38 mins – Pontmenard loop: on the RAID
Week 16 – ride 14 (Sat) – 1 hr 45 mins – Evriguet, Corbinais, la Riaye, Brignac and Kerminy: on La Rossa
Week 16 – ride 15 (Sat) – 1 hr 4 mins – local lanes: on the Urban Shaper
Week 16 – ride 16 (Sat) – 47 mins – local off-road frolics: on the RAID
Week 16 – ride 17 (Sun) – 43 mins – a splashy and very windy Pontmenard loop: on the RAID
Week 16 – ride 18 (Sun) – 35 mins – local lanes: on the MASSI
Week 16 – ride 19 (Sun) – 42 mins – local lanes: on the RAID

Just west of the quarry in Ménéac on Tuesday – it’s not an area I know at all well but I’ll be back. I reckon there’s a fairly lumpy 50+km ride out there – hopefully we’ll get the right weather for it one day in May..

Rides 1 to 5 were battered by unco-operative wind - not nice riding when the sun was hiding.
W16R1 - Hybrid 2 hours 4 mins - Commute to Clitheroe & back. Took a winding scenic alternative route back via Whalley.
W16R2 - Mares 30 mins - Maryport cliffs, prom north & back again.
W16R3 - Mares 30 mins - Coastal ride Roosebeck, Rampside, Roa Island return.
W16R4 - Mares 56 mins - Old Langho, Hacking, Langho, Wilpshire, return
W16R5 - Hybrid 54 mins - Burnley, Barrowford, Brierfield, Fence etc - just making up the miles and a bit boring, even the gravel, except when it rained then the slippery conditions were cause for entertainment.
W16R6 - Hybrid 1 hour 56 mins - Clarion loop XL - Burnley, Brierfield, Barrowford, Roughlee, Clarion, Newchurch, Sabden Fold, the Ridge, Black Hill, The Ridge, Fence, Quaker Bridge, Burnley

I have still been getting over my recent lurgy so nothing spectacular done on the bike, but at least this challenge got me out for just over 1.5 hours again.

Ride durations rounded down to the nearest quarter of an hour and excluding breaks.

Week 16: 3 qualifying rides, 27 km, 1.5 hrs.
  • Ride 1 (Wed): (Singlespeed) 9 km. Slightly less lumpy than usual local loop on A646/A6033. 1/2 hr.
  • Ride 2 (Thu): (Singlespeed) 9 km. Slightly less lumpy than usual local loop on A646/A6033. 1/2 hr.
  • Ride 3 (Fri): (Singlespeed) 9 km. Slightly less lumpy than usual local loop on A646/A6033. 1/2 hr.
Success rate: 16 weeks out of 16.

49 qualifying rides so far this year, totalling 759 km, and taking approximately 46.5 hrs.

Next week should be a lot more energetic than this one was!

Week 17

Four months into 2023 – 16 weeks done – and four of us left in this challenge. I’ve kept comprehensive notes of who’s done what so far, including all those who started but then dropped out.

For a raft of reasons, I’m starting to feel somewhat disengaged with the challenge so … if someone else is prepared to keep notes of who has done what, then please do so – because I won’t do it anymore.

This should have become a mutually supportive challenge thread by this point in the year – but instead it’s becoming a dispiriting grind.

I’ve usually done my 3 or 4 weekly qualifying rides by Tuesday afternoon so I’ll just post those each week (without adding any other info or photos). Or maybe I’ll save them up and block book them every two or three weeks.

I’m also contemplating a break from being active on CC .. but I’ll still log on regularly and check my alerts – and I’ll “like” any posts where someone has actually made an effort.

Week 17 – ride 1 (Mon) – 1 hr 14 mins – Plaisance, Kerminy, Evriguet and SBdM: on La Rossa
Week 17 – ride 2 (Mon) – 2 hrs 1 min – Brignac, la Riaye, la Corbinais, Evriguet, Guilliers, Evriguet and SBdM: on La Rossa
Week 17 – ride 3 (Tues) – 44 mins – Devison loop: on the MASSI
Week 17 – ride 4 (Tues) – 54 mins – Villedieu, Pont de Rox, Plaisance and SBdM: on La Rossa

W17R2 - Mares 50 mins - extended gravel loop.

I'm sorry about that. I'd like to thank you for organising it - it has certainly got me to make an effort to get out far more often than I would have done otherwise.
