If you mean the "slime" ones, I have tried them, and just given up after Friday. They certainly seemed to help, but when I did get a puncture that wouldn't self-seal, they are pretty well unrepairable - I couldn't get a patch to stick at all.
Yes - innertubes with "slime" inside. So they are available in the UK...
Did you get home after the puncture? That's the most important thing to me. Deal with the problem later and, if necessary, replace the innertube. I've only had to replace two in 7 years and they're not expensive - I think the last one I got was 6 euros + VAT (but like everything else, I expect they've gone up in price recently).
I really don't know if they are patchable - but I wouldn't give up with the principle of them. Just get a new innertube occasionally,
IIRC @ColinJ once spent 40 minutes at the roadside repairing a puncture.... 40 minutes! Well, if that had been me, I'd have chucked the bike in a ditch, given up cycling and taken up knitting or watching telly (something less stressful anyway).
