The older I get, the faster I used to be ...
The use of the word 'around', instead of 'about'. The use of 'issues' instead of 'problem'. Resulting in: 'issues around', instead of 'problem about'.

This is similar to one of my pet hates...pacific instead of specific. Oh, and then instead of than! People like to get that wrong the other way around too!

If we're talking about language, one that niggles me is "authorised". Wrong!!! According to the OED it's authorized - look it up. Councils, the BBC, government bodies etc insist on using the wrong spelling all the time.

(I may possibly have had beer which is making me more irate about this than normal. ):shy:

I agree with wrong spelling, but theres something about any work where there is a 'z' where is should (or could in this case) be a 's' makes me cringe. I hate Americanised (aware should probably be Americanized) spellings and it just reminds me of that!

Yes the UK spelling should be Americanized according to the OED. The ironic thing about "authorized" is that the Americans frequently mis-spell it using the UK spelling.

The language is constantly evolving and the spelling is only because one man said so a few hundred years ago. Other people had their own way of spelling. Who is to say they were any less right?

This subject used to annoy me intensely, and then, I read something to the effect of what I have just said above, and I realised just how incredibly trivial it all is! I mean, take a chill pill, please!

I blame the Americans!

Although I think (and I may be wrong) that lots of words with the s/z (e.g. capitalisation / civilization) were originally spelt with a 'z' in the English language, then moved to using an 's' instead. So it may be that the Americans are actually using the older spelling.

So, people who complain about spelling and silly, little, inconsequential mistakes.

Chill!

If people can understand you, then what is the problem?

I do completely agree, but the z/s thing is just something that gets on my nerves, not really sure why. Other mistakes/ the evolution of language I have no problem with.

There are far more important things in life to worry about. It is like the people who write into Points Of View and The Radio Times just to make some sort of pedantic reply about something which never ever mattered in the first place.

Seriously, chill!
