I remember the photos of Challenger exploding in the newspaper next day (dad always stopped to pick up his daily when he took me to school), but didn't see the footage until more recently, as we didn't have a TV when I was growing up.

Likewise regarding the Chernobyl accident. That was all over the papers at the same time Henri Toivonen was killed in an accident on Corsica.

We did hear about all three on the radio though, as Radio 4 was near enough a permanent fixture.

Elvis, I was at scout camp. Leaders seemed in shock and none of us really got it. John Lennon, I was at school, lots of tears from the kids even though most wouldn’t have been Beatles fans. 9-11 was at work, a technician managed to get an old tv to work and I had to stand by the door holding the aerial.

9/11 was in one of those "old fashioned" TV shops, with literally dozens of screens showing the first plane hitting the tower as me and the shop staff stood there with mouths wide open.

7/7, at my desk in Birmingham (where I worked at that time) trying to track down one of my Managers who was down on a one day course, in London. Transpired he was on a tube train behind one of those that blew up, with his train being then stuck in the tunnel. He then organised a single file line of fellow passengers back to the previous station, while reminding them continually to stay clear of the live rail. He then walked 10 miles to one of our offices, and got driven home.

At work for all of them, but the one that sticks out is John Lennons shooting, I was on the way to work with four co workers, we were all shocked.

I remember I was at work and a truck driver came over and told me the awful news.
He was always a joker with a very dark sense of humour and I didn't take what he said seriously until I saw a group of work mates gathering around the radio listening to the tragic events unfolding.
I finished work at 2 pm and remember my ex wife was really poorly at the time suffering with Crohn's disease and I sat with her in the bedroom watching it on TV.

In our front room, listening to the radio, when they reported that Tommy Simpson had collapsed and flown to hospital and subsequently died
