Ooh, that reminds me. A new Volvo chez figbat - the previous XC40 has been replaced by… another XC40. This one has the so-called ‘hybrid’ B4 engine, with a 48v battery and MGU. Despite being the closest equivalent replacement model it’s all change inside, with Google now in charge of the car instead of Volvo’s Sensus system. A step forward in some ways but a lot of retrograde steps in certain functions.

Down to one Volvo now, having sold the C70 and S60, and acquired a Panda 4x4, which is a hoot, and very good (on new AS tyres) on the icy roads

I was looking at those last night. As they are higher and I presume more comfy than a regular V70. How do you find the fuel economy?
First of all it’s a D5 E3 163bhp variant.
The raised ride height, haldex system(if it works) and styling mods/under vehicle guards are the only differences that I know of…there are probably more.
I don’t know if they’re more comfortable as I’ve never been in a V70.
If I was to believe the trip computer states 40mpg ave(rubbish).
On the runs I’ve actually measured mpg fill to fill vs mileage, all on long motorway runs I’ve achieved 58mpg(Rochdale to Loch Lomond and back with a fairly empty car), and 46mpg down to Cornwall with a full car towing a packed trailer….all at typical Volvo speeds.
If I had to replace it, if I found a clean 940(for insurance purposes) as I’ve found I’m not doing more than 7k a year or V70 I’d go with that and bung on some cross climates or your tyre of choice.
That said there’s some good examples about so purchase price is also key.
I paid 1k, I’ve paid about £750 on belts/gearbox oil change odds n sods in total, 40k later….it’s rough however the don’t worry about supermarket war wounds🤣

I paid £800 for it four years ago, spent about a £1 per day servicing and MOTing it and sold it to a scrap co. for £450. Piston ring failure pressurised the bottom of the engine which forced oil past the seals and all over the cam belt. Ah well. That's the unavoidable nature of bangernomics, eventually they go bang. A very capable car, but there was no joy to be had driving it. I much preferred my old 940 turbo which was probably slower but had a soul.

Snapped O/S/F coil spring Tuesday eve, AA callout resulted with a very harsh ride to the garage to drop the car off. The first real failure besides the battery in 5 years. Hopefully I'll get to another 5 years relatively cheap motoring from the old girl.

Finally got the V70R back on the road, for now. The horrible, ineffective oil cooler and associated pipework which leaked like a sieve has gone, replaced by what is essentially a bypass plate from a non-turbo car. Extensive oil testing from a very well considered expert in these cars has shown no value to the cooler if you use semi/full synthetic oils. The radiator is still cracked, and a new one awaits for when the weather improves. Meantime the 240 estate and new jalopy Ford Galaxy keep me moving.

Well that went quickly. Advertised the 240 on car and classic plus a facebook group Wednesday. Lots of interest and the first who enquired came this morning, paid asking price and drove away happy. Shame to see it go, really enjoyed the old girl. Hopefully gone to a good home.
