The very best system is the Sainsbury hand-held scanner. Scan as you go, saves a lot of time. You are even allowed to put items straight into your carrier bag etc once you have scanned whilst moving around the store - brilliant! Very handy for smaller shopping trips.
Tesco have the same system which I agree is brilliant in principle. The issue I have is the number of bag checks Tesco carry out. After I got stopped three weeks running I stopped going for months..........mind you my dislike of Tesco is legendary.

Not been stopped in the monster-sized Sainsbury in Kendal... yet!

^_^ Can't beat a good set of principles, eh?

My Sainsburys sacked six staff when they went over to self check outs.
I knew one of them and she still has found another post so she's on the dole,
all beacuse Sainsburys want to make more money and expect us to do it for them.
All this self service started as the petols stations I blame that

Anyone else come on here and see people reacting to things you posted and thinking

Oh Gods what carp did I put on THAT thread

just me???

I do wonder why, in response to a perfectly sensible and non-contentious post, a Wow appears amongst a host of Likes.

In fact, I am usually totally befuddled.

I refuse to you self scanner check outs and the hand held one
When they start paying me to do their job I may change my mind
Likewise. And it'd have to be the minimum half hour even if it only takes me 10 minutes.

Not had much luck with selfscan systems over the years. First one used was at Morrisons at the Owlcotes centre, Pudsey. A couple of extra "0's" were added on to the price when scanned, and it couldn't be changed. The last time I used one, they were the only ones open, despite their adverts saying they'd always open a checkout, the somewhat "fed up" assistant insisted I'd to use the selfscan. She stood watching, making sure I scanned everything, then watched as the screen went blank. First on the one I was being made use, then the rest. Including the ones at the cigarette counter, leaving me with no way of paying.

She didn't like me after that.

I think they have a splurge sometimes - you probably just got unlucky
They also do a bag check for the first few times that you use it to check the "you have got the hang of it"
other possible reasons are available

but generally I can go weeks and week before I get a bag check in Tesco
