Thanks but no thanks. I think I'll pass.
Now it's lighter, I can see a few branches have broken on the fruit trees, stuff has moved and I don't know where the solar panels that we bought just to give us power for things like a few lights , Internet etc have wandered off somewhere. Mr WD will have to go out and find them. Hopefully they won't be damaged.

In all the years I have been driving I have never had to replace the windscreen washer pump
I have now and I'm £72 lighter, £22 for the pump and the rest was on labour :cursing:

I went to Aldi yesterday and wandered around the middle aisles. Came home with a cable crimp tool and a spray bottle of bathroom cleaner. First time I have used the self checkout and it went smoothly. Now I just need to remember what task I had in mind when I purchased the crimp tool.🤔

Aldi have the best self-scanners of all the supermarkets. They rarely miss a beat. The extra long barcodes are good and they DON'T do bag checks.

Last year when our VW just passed the 18 month old mark, the washers packed up.

After a quick check I diagnosed that a new pump was needed.

After much haggling with the local VW Service Manager he finally agreed that a 3 week wait for an appointment to diagnose and sort the problem was unacceptable! He booked us in for a 9am 'while you wait' appointment the next day.

We duly arrived and started pigging out on their lovely coffee & chocolate bourbons (well, I did!) The tech' guy agreed it would probably need a new pump.

It took 2 hours!!! An unhappy me asked to see the Service Manager to explain the time taken. Apparently <30mins to remove, refit & test. And...

...1.5 hours to run through an exhaustive VW diagnostic protocol to identify the fault. If not followed to the letter then VW would not reimburse the dealership its costs for parts & labour!

I was speechless.

Our is good too. No bag checks but there is usually an assistant lurking in the self checkout section, presumably to assist with anything that doesn’t scan, but I would imagine looking out for dodgy customers too.

They started out with a 'lurking' assistant when they first installed them but have now changed the system.

There are 2 upright chrome 'theft scanners' that you have to pass through when exiting the SSC's. Any age-authorisations are carried out by the multi-tasking assistant working on the adjacent normal checkout, which is always manned.

Afterthought: Should 'manned' be 'peopled' these days?

They are superb, far better than any other supermarket that we have used.

Absolutely love self-service checkouts!

WHere possible I use the self scan things you carry around with you

probably takes longer overall but the scanner works everytime and when you have finished getting stuff you don;t have to wait around - just pay and leave
Tesco have a system where there is a self-scan only area - but you can also use the normal self scan tills as well - which can be fun when you wander up to a self scan with a full trolley and get lots of "looks"
then finish in a minute or so and leave!

ASDA's one are not as good - work OK but the scanner seems to take a while to find the details - looks like a rubbish network and/or server in the store for them - but they do work
both have staff around all the time to help with authorisations (alcohol etc)#bag checks are normally rare but they seem to have a surge sometimes and you suddenly get a lot ina few weeks
you also get extra if they find you being naughty
I once had a bag check and found I had forgotten to scan 6 bottles of wine
and once I had picked up 6 tins of rice pudding and scanned one 6 times - not realising one was a low fat version - so a different bar code!!

also great for keeping kids under control when they help out
you just have to check for extra things they might have scanned "by accident"
the grand kids have defined jobs in Tesco and take them very seriously!

Yes, there was a lady supervising the checkout area, I only had two items and it all scanned first time. I might have mentioned it before, but I read about a guy who has a YouTube channel and he uploads videos of him trying to pack his shopping away so fast that he is waiting for the checkout operator to scan the last item. There’s tips on what and where to strategically place items on the conveyor belt so as to slow the cashier down😁

The very best system is the Sainsbury hand-held scanner. Scan as you go, saves a lot of time. You are even allowed to put items straight into your carrier bag etc once you have scanned whilst moving around the store - brilliant! Very handy for smaller shopping trips.
