Was chilly this morning. Took Bruce for a good long walk down onto Brackmills, a nearby industrial estate. It's a 55M drop in altitude to get down there and it was blummen chilly as all the cold air had pooled.

I like walking round there on a Sunday. It's deserted, gives the place a so,what post apocalyptic feel.

That was the best thing about lockdown

riding around areas that are normally busy but were now deserted
such as the airport - all shut up and deserted
I did see a buzzard around there a few times - once just perched on a generator building by the viewing area - happily just sitting there!

The terminal building was totally shut down

The airport was still active but hardly any flights - it had to stay open for flights from the Isle of Mann as they are necessary fro NHS referrals and stuff and can;t be cancelled
but they were moved to a small private terminal at the far end of the runway

the local industrial estate was also great to ride around

That's interesting. Likewise I use to be a good speller but it has deteriorated. To my surprise it's ordinary, everyday words which flummox me. "definitley, "unecessary," and "ocassionally," are three I struggle with.

My language use has deteriorated. If I want to write well, I have to spend time composing and editing. When i was younger words simply flowed. I think this is because we so often see five words used when one is sufficient. It's about overall declining standards which have seeped into common (mis)usage.

I'm still quite good with spelling, but one of my blind spots is using principle and principal correctly.

Something has broken the bottom of the last fence panel at the bottom of the garden.
Not just broken it, bu torn off the strip of wood along the bottom and pulled off part of the overlap behind it.
My neighbour had a badger in her garden a month or so back, and had torn down part of her fence.

Thankfully, "my" badgers aren't quite that destructive; instead of smashing the fence, they've dug a hole under it!

WE ARE ALL DOOMED!!!!!

apparently there is a Yellow warning for snow and ice tomorrow and Tuesday
(note - do not eat the yellow snow!)

it even includes us which is not normal!

can;t see it happening round here but stranger things have happened!
(we are only just above sea level and close to salt water so snow tends to take one look at us and bugger off!)

Been out for a little walk, cold and grey, more winter than autumn. But it looks like this weeks snow will miss us.

I was useless at school and have continued to be useless ever since, at spelling and everything else. Though I did surprise myself the other day during Richard Osman’s show, correctly guessing the year when Cardiff became capital of Wales.

Had both flu and Covid jabs yesterday morning, last night I slept really badly because of the pain in both upper arms where I’d been injected, I managed to wash the car and do some other jobs this morning, but now feel completely wiped out, I’ve lit the log burner and I’m enjoying a cup of tea, it’s very out of character for me to put my feet up during the day but I feel I need it.

Yes, a problem with the English language and also spell checkers, auto-correct and so on.

I don't use these until the end of preparing a document, if at all. There's nothing I hate more than someone in the UK talking about color.

Barnet,
I've cut the grass again, twice in a week now. It won't stop growing.
A short bike ride today, only 10 miles, but good to keep the legs ticking over.
Millie has been walked for a second time, and now I am eating a crusty baguette filled with Yorkshire blue cheese, ham and piccallily. I also have a glass of Cote du Rhone Villages on the go as an accompliament.
Happy days.🍷

@Mo1959 may I ask you a question?

I may have missed some it, but, I dont recall you commenting on using your indoor trainer recently?

I ask, because, I have been considering buying myself an indoor smart trainer, but, I am a bit concerned that after a few weeks, I will tire of using it, and, it will just gather dust.

Have you managed to stay motivated to use your's?

My reasoning is a mixture of weather, and, personal circumstances, Mrs @BoldonLad's health means she is no longer up for cycling, and, I cannot leave her alone, whilst I go off for a ride. So, in winter, a combination of unsuitable weather and inability to get one of the daughters to "attend" when the weather is playing ball, is making it increasingly difficult to get regular rides in. My lake of self discipline and tendency to nibble, means my weight is creeping (well, maybe a bit fast then creeping) up. ;)

Probably only about once per week recently as I prefer being outdoors. I envisage it picking up more over the winter.

This may help:

Mo gets out a lot more than me! I am a fair weather rider/walker/hiker and this year we have had a dreadful wet year in The Lakes.

The treadmill, turbo trainer and multi-gym have seen a lot of use in 2024.

My treadmill, which I have had since November '23 (JTX Sprint 5), has had a reasonable amount of use during the year I have had it.

Basically, it is used as part of my twice a week routine using all 3 pieces of exercise equipment - ie as a 30 minute warm-up prior to the turbo and multi-gym.

Additionally, every day, apart from the above, I do 30 mins on the treadmill if I do not 'get out'.

Seems to work well for me.

The 30 mins are high incline (8-12) at a fast walk speed (3.5mph) and my HR gets up to about 125bpm.

Motivation, when I first got the treadmill I built up to longer and longer sessions. This proved unsustainable and, if I missed one, I became very demotivated.

The short, moderately intense (for walking) sessions seem to work very well. 30 minutes in each day is easy to find and minimises boredom.

I covered around 500 miles on the treadmill in the last year. By no means massive but not bad for something that was easy to achieve on a simple piece of equipment.

Thanks for that.

Yes, my (or maybe I should say our) "fitness regime" (a bit grand for my 77yo fitness level ;) ) used to be maintained by regular walking (say 5 miles three times per week), and, cycle rides (say three times 20 miles), all done jointly with Mrs B.

Mrs B is still physically fit, but, I don't feel she is safe riding on the road, because of her Alzheimers symptoms. Mrs B is OK for walking, and, we could increase those levels, but, my 77yo knees are not up to that.

I have to think of something which either, we can do together, or, something I can do without leaving the house (unless I can organise "cover"). This all becomes increasingly problematic if the weather is not good.

I have thought of a Tandem, but, that does not solve the weather issue, so, now thinking of some form of indoor exercise equipment.
