Not being a recipient of free prescriptions, isn't there a box you need to tick on the back of the prescription at the pharmacy? I would suggest that the pharmacist should have informed your friend.

Mine did, your D.O.B. is on the prescription and as soon as I passed 60 they just gave me the prescription without having to sign anything.

One thing I don't like is the 'Nominated Chemist' malarky, when I got a prescription before very often Maz would be going into town so would drop into Boots and collect it for me as she was doing a bit of shopping/meeting friends etc. (she's at a bit of a 'loose end' since retirement)

Isn't it about time England took a leaf out of the Scottish playbook and scrapped prescription charges (and University tuition fees for another thing)

Couldn't agree more, I've just had a look at the free prescription eligibility list here https://www.nhsbsa.nhs.uk/help-nhs-prescription-costs/free-nhs-prescriptions

It all seems rather complicated. Just scrap the bloody fees...

I don't think the pharmacist likes your friend.

It is technically the customers responsibility to check as it is them who is liable, but you'd perhaps expect the courtesy of a reminder by the pharmacist.

I wouldn't blame the actual pharmacist as they dish out the tablets. It's more of a pharmacy assistant, as in hands over the prescription, misunderstanding I'd say. 🤔

Talking to a friend yesterday, he told me he only found out after reading up online (worrying about this mob's supposed intentions to stop 'free' prescriptions for over 60's) about his entitlement to 'free' prescriptions, that aged 66 he's been paying for six year's when he was entitled to free ones. Wouldn't you have thought that some kind of authority would've informed him he didn't need to pay!🤔
My aunt only found out that she had been entitled to a free TV licence after they were stopped for people like her.

The pharmacist is only likely to ask if they think you look over 60. I think they expect you to look at the prescription yourself.

Of course here in Wales (as in Scotland), all prescriptions are free anyhow.
