look at old photos to see who is smiling ;)

am afraid I don't really follow royal events (only really realised this weekend that william has 3 kids) so you'll have to fill me in. Oh how times have changed during Liz's reign - as a kid I did a royal family scrapbook as a cubs project.

what was the orange car?
(I didn't really see it - was out)

Neither did I, was it Edd China's Outspan mini, not that he is the only one with one, I think there are 5 other ones, or 5 including his.

the Lancaster is a regular part of it - fair enough - have seen at air shows a few times - same conflict - would you have preferred a messerschmitt?

Well now, you come to mention it, if it's called the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight then provided it's a period correct model, why not?. Or indeed a Dornier. But not, obviously, a Fw 190 because that came too late. As to the Dakota, well ... ;)

But @Phaeton has promised he'll mention it and they'll get the name changed to suit my pedantry

Never mind the planes ...
What upset me is that none of the pilots were genuine WWII veterans

When the BBMF gained that name, the Flight only had Spitfires and a Hurricane. The Lancaster and Dakota were added later (much later, in the Dakota's case) as it's the best place for them to be looked after, maintained, and flown professionally. I suppose if they wanted to, they could have changed the name at that point to something like "World War II Memorial Flight". But they didn't, I'm guessing because the name has long since stuck by now.

Thanks. What a boring, sensible explanation.

I'm probably not the only person in the country for whom it set off pedantry alarms. Everyone else was going "wooo" and me and half a dozen other nerds were saying "Well, actually, the Lancaster didn't enter service until 1942, by which time the Battle of Britain was over". And everyone else was rolling their eyes.

Has anyone else noticed? In all the restrospectives which I have seen or heard not a single mention has been made of the most important event which occurred during the reign: over 40 years' membership of the EC and EU.
