To my surprise, & pleasure, I saw John on Friday, I thought he'd retired
He still has his GAZ!

He’s one of our ‘Max-Fax’ Consultants

Whilst cutting through Castleford

My first thought was Volvo C303 ‘LapLander’, as I saw it from the road passing that side-street, but possibly ’Eastern Bloc’?

I drove Goddessess from HMS Nelson during a fire brigade strike.

They drove like a dream.

Is a sentence, you will ever hear by anyone who drove them full of water.

We (a surveying company in Notts in the mid 1970s) had a Bedford RL (same as the GGs ?) with a command cabin on the chassis. I seem to remember 4 mpg on the road, 2 mpg off road. I never got to drive it but the gearshift system did look intimidating (it may not have been, I was only 17 at the time so lacking world and driving experience)

I remember when PRB Services (Pudsey, Leeds) was offering refurbed/runners, for less than £5,000, but that was in mid 80s

I would love one of those, ideally the REME or artillery model with the hi-ab hoist. I could quite happily afford one, but parking it in our narrow street might be a bit of an issue to say the least. Only practical if we buy a country estate / excessively big place out in the wilds, which neither of us want

A 101, Champ or Pinzgauer is about the practical limit even factoring in a move to a place with a drive. Alvis, Scammel or tracked vehicle are not realistic options really

Not necessarily 'practical' but the Alvis CVRT range are about the same size as a Transit van, apart from the Sultan and Samaritan which are in Luton van territory. They're also tax exempt and legal to drive on the road as long as you hold Cat H. I'm not sure I'd fancy doing it solo though as side and rear visibility are very limited.

A CVRT is likely one of the few, ahem, "practical" choice of tracked vehicle for a normal person and would very much appeal too. For me I'd got for the Spartan or one of the other APC versions rather than the so say "tank" versions.

As an aside an old friend designed the gearboxes, at least for the earlier ones. He was apparently one of the eminent experts on epicyclic gearboxes. In his later years I think he mostly did wind turbines, presumably also the gearboxes. Back in the day he'd done the gearbox for one or other model of Brabazon, which were complex linkages joining twin engines to a pair of contra-rotating propa

That was part of my sales pitch to the wife. I argued we could use the hoist to lift her in her wheelchair and put her in the back.

Not keen
