Look at those wooden drawers, a proper Grace Brothers, 'I'm free Captain Peacock.'
There was a gents outfitters here in Great Harwood for many years. I remember being fitted for my first pair of trousers/long pants there for my uncle's wedding in February 1970. His shop was very Grace Brothers looking! He had the polished wood drawers, the tape measure round the shoulders, the part mannequins with the string vests and underpants on top of the glass topped cabinets, along with the other stuff of their time. Also, he was always seen in a smart suit and would probably shudder at today's standard of 'slovenly' men's dress wear. When he died many were very surprised to hear about his heroic past! He never mentioned it according to his son, due to respect for the enemy he shot down. His son said he carried his grief for his comrades and his enemies who died to his grave and never thought of himself as a war hero.

Edit....Just remembered. His son also told me that he visited the family of one of the pilots he shot down during his many battles, to ask for forgiveness. The son said the family were so overwhelmed with Mr Mercer's chivalry they became very good friends with him and often invited him over to Germany for holidays.
Squadron Leader Donald Mercer. A true war hero and a well dressed gentleman tailor to boot!!! 🧐
