Why not just tuck your shirt tails into your underpants like most sensible men
I'm trying to think which approach is sexier.

I wore this tie today. I was going to add my gold plated horse crop tiepin, but I couldn't find it. Thinking back, the last time I had it on was last Sunday, when I walked round the local cemetery. I'm hoping it fell off in my car, when I put my seat belt on, or in my flat when I took my tie off. If it fell off in the cemetery it's a looking for a needle in a haystack job!!
That sounds fine to me. Good to hear someone who sees smart but casual meaning still wearing collared shirts and trousers/pants and not meaning jeans and a t-shirt.I'm starting a new, proper job in a proper / big company on Monday. Office smart casual I think, but what is that? I'm thinking, dark blue chino or slightly off formal trousers, white possibly button down collar shirt, dark blue jumper and a darker brown almost Derby/ kind of rounded toe shoes with a slightly different colour sole. Does that sound like office smart casual to you?

I've been working 11 plus possibly 20 odd years in jeans, polo shirts and s3 safety boots. The last 11 years with the understanding I wouldn't have an issue with throwing away my clothing if I got particularly messy at work. They were cheap and cheerful jeans and polo shirts. It's gong to be a big change being even a little smart with shirt trousers and shoes. Not up on office wear.
Fashion is something that passed me by with a wide birth!

That sounds appropriate but very boring. You can dress smart casual without being a clone. Mind you, I often wear a jacket and tie with trainers while my colleague next to me wears shorts and a Hawaiian shirt. We probably get away with it because we're nerdy scientists tucked away in the lab office.
Cant go wrong with Chinos, shirt and jumper. Dark blue are more practical than lighter colours too.
My fear is I might look like the old relatives I knew as a kid! Some of those blue chinos are soft touch and look like old people trousers when I was a kid. At least they're not Farrahs! Lol!
Very hard to go wrong with Tyrwhitt's navy ultimate chinos.
The origins of dress down Friday was Hawaii. One of the islands biggest shirt makers had a promotion called aloha Friday. It was a success and spread. Then Levis got involved with promoting dockers with a dress down Friday.
Oh and I reckon labs have less formality about dress codes. Having said that my last lab experience I had to wear long trousers, labcoat, leather boots/shoes, heavy PVC apron, two pairs of gloves of which the outer were so thick they were hard to use, safety glasses and full face shield. And when a bunch of first year undergrads were caught by lab tech running around behind my station like in the playground they got the implied threats of violence from the toue of her voice. I was measuring out concentrated sulphuric acid and concentrated hydrofluoric acid at the time! Not something you want to spill! Especially since the nearest acid shower was in the floor above!
The old City saying is "Never brown in Town" But I'd make an exception for oxblood.I tells you what else Accy, this modern trend for brown shoes with a blue suit makes me want to vomit. They'll be mixing checks and stripes next.
