You do need a 'Good Goosing' with Down , it does keep you warm., the cheaper Split stuff comes treated these days, but the outer does need to be proofed..
As long as you have had a good Goosing' you will be warm.

I've got a down jacket that looks not dissimilar to the trendy ones pictured. It's incredibly warm. Insanely so. I don't wear it in this country as it's never cold enough. I reserve it for -10 and below.

It seems that around 70 percent of the population is/are wearing such garbs as this item below these days! 🧐

https://www.getthelabel.com/4a001605cu3/berghaus-urban-arkos-reflect-down-jacket-4a001605cu3/onSuccess=home&ln I see wearers, both young and old pretending to be warm in our winter weather,:cold: while wearing padded bin bags. But how can light weight plastic keep you warm, compared to 21 ounce in weight per square meter yard British tweed 🇬🇧 I ask!!🧐

Because they are very insulating.

The same way a light duvet keeps you warm much better than the heavy blankets we used to use before duvets came along (initially called "continental quilts").

I would expect to be much warmer in one of those than in your tweed coat (though either will be too warm for me in the UK).

Ski jackets have been like those for decades - for good reason.

Nothing is as warm as a good 21 ounce British tweed!🇬🇧 Here endeth the lesson!! 🧐 Besides that, why does 70 percent of the population feel the need to dress in black! I find black to be soooo chavvy!!🧐👎

Tweed will also keep you warm when it's wet through, unlike down which isn't really suitable for the British climate unless you wear something waterproof over the top.

I don't understand this trend for folk to dress in black. It's not as if they're just off out to storm an embassy.

I've got a 'hand knitted' Alpaca jumper my ex bought me back from South America*, it's too warm to wear indoors but fantastic when it's freezing outside and stays warm when it is wet

* She went on a 3 week 'Machu Piccho' treking holiday about 35 years ago

does Tweed even get "wet through"? The lanolin in the wool repels the rain at the "surface"

Tweed, whilst it's good stuff, is only somewhat water resistant. My own tweed so say "shooting" suit has got some kind of teflon coating to somewhat improve the water resistance whilst out on the grouse moor, but if it's really wet you want a proper anorak.

Down jackets are superb for dry cold, and if it's well below freezing it is by definition dry. This I've only worn mine in Canada and Norway in the winter. In the wet they aren't much cop other than for sedentary activity like manning a radio on the hill or whatever. And even then it only works with the waterproof outer ones. I have a synthenic pretend down waterproof Mountain Equipment one which I occasionally wear for this kind of thing. Trouble is I got mine cheap via the cave rescue team and it's got "cave rescue" in big writing on the back so you look a bit of a twat wearing it to the pub in town even if it might be ideal otherwise. I was expecting a discrete little badge on the arm rather than the "look at me" big letters. I do understand ME want to get max advertising kudos for their cave / mountain rescue link for their subsidised gear but too ostentatious means it doesn't get many outings outwith actual call-outs

I'd wear it to the pub, you might end up with women looking at you in the same way that they look at firemen. 😂
