A few years ago, for some reason, I looked up "pith helmet". In the movies it was a sign of quinessential Britishness.

As casual web searches often do, it turned into an evening-long dive into the web. None of the "British" pith helmets looked quite like I expected. It turned out the French also used pith helmets, and what I was used to seeing in Hollywood movies was a variant of those - specifically, the Vietnamese version.

Why Hollywood customers would use those, going back to at least the 1930s, is a complete mystery to me.

Mine is the French pattern as the wider brim is more sensible for a sun hat. Seemingly the style adopted by Windsor Davies's "lovely boys" too. The British pattern is narrower like those worn in "Zulu"
Sadly I'm not allowed to wear it - "pith off" as it were

I've just ordered this. I didn't spot it till yesterday, even though I look at the Cordings website every day. 🤔 It's a 21 ounce tweed which means super warmth, and a navy blue tweed is quite a welcome contrast to my usual green, brown and burgundy ensemble. 🧐

I've decided to return this item to Cordings. On opening the box on arrival yesterday, looking at it then trying it on, I found it to be not as thick and heavy as I expected, with the supposed tweed feeling more like knitted wool than tough weather resistant tweed. It also looks and feels too casual for me. If it was say 300 quid I'd keep it, but I'm not paying nearly £700 for something that doesn't quite match up to my expectations. It'll be the first Cordings item I've returned in what must be 5 or 6 years of buying Cordings clothing. I might just accept the refund, or buy this instead.

Then again I might keep it. 🤔 I mentioned returning it to a friend yesterday, who said she liked it on me, and even though it's unusually casual for me, she thinks it's a break from my more formal wear, offering alternative ideas. I did try it on with blue and purple items which probably made me dislike it, as I tried it on with brown and green items yesterday which made it look much better.🤔

Three nice wool, country style ties bought from a charity shop this afternoon, all three for £10.20. Cordings ties are usually £69 on their website. The other two are from this place https://www.anthonyformalwear.co.uk/

I actually like that ! Does come in 4ft 2 "chest, 3ft yoke to waist, or what ever way you measure it ?

I don't quite understand your question, but the one I bought is a large size/42 chest and measures 34 inches in length, excluding the collar in that measurement. I'm still undecided about whether to keep it or not. 🤔 Now if they had it in burgundy, or a burnt orange it would be perfect. I don't mind navy, but it is difficult to keep mark and stain free, though wool is easier than gaberdine which was a nightmare when I had a gaberdine raincoat, albeit it a so dark navy it was almost black. Every time I wore it I had to use a warm/damp dishcloth to wipe annoying marks off it. This coat is very well made and should be for the price. I have a month to make my mind up, so I'm going to analysis paralysis it to the limit, over the Christmas period!

I am implying I actually like it , but give my measurements in feet and inches, not that I am massively overweight, just that I ate all my crusts when young ,and growed tall & broad , just like me Mam said I would in inches that's 50 '' chest and a yard long 36"" for the torso I stand 6' 4" in my socks and have never felt to the need to wear platform shoes.
I am the kinda of guy to walk tall and carry a big stick, which I do!
Even Drago may fear to meet me on a dark night, as I eat raw Squirrels should the be foolish to think I am a stout English oak.
Yes I am big , with a B-I-G !

So whats happened then? You left us with a proper cliffhanger!

Did you get any nice clothes / treat yourself for Xmas?
Not been logged in here much lately, so never got around to saying how much I liked that middle tie in the photo.
Do you mean this? If so it's still here as I have till the end of January to return it, but I doubt I will as it's one of those items you might send back then later in life wished you still had it. 🤔

To complicate matters I bought this one below after seeing it on the Cordings site with 15 percent off, which was then reduced even further with 10 percent off voucher, I seem to receive with every order now.

You are up late! Yes I did mean that purchase. I totally get the 'will I regret it' dilema. Could so easily go either way, whatever you decide. I must admit though I quite like the look of it, something interestingly different to what I see anyone wearing round by me.

You deserve to get an item free every year - I bet loads of us never heard of Cordings before you were posting. I must admit they have some really appealing fabrics and colours. I knew nothing about fabric weights and the consequences before I read the posts on this thread. Its been very educational. I am not much of a dresser myself, but I enjoy your enjoyment and the chat it creates on here.

Off to bed now. Have a good night.

That's what a friend of mine said on showing the jacket to her. That alone made me think about keeping it. 🤔

Educational for me as well, as before looking closely at the specification bit on the item's descriptions I never thought about the weight of the cloth/tweed they are made from. I've even chosen a Cordings suit over another one as it was heavier, therefore warmer than the one I liked the look of slightly more.
