I bought a pair of tan coloured, Loake 1880's (top of their range) loafers the other year. They are the only leather Goodyear welted sole shoes I have, the others being Dainite rubber soles. I don't feel safe wearing them, thinking I might slip, even on dry days. Also, they are too 'fancy' for tweed and for summer shorts, no matter how formal those shorts are. 🤔

Dianite are much better. If there's a choice I always get that, and since most of my
Crocketts have been 2nds or secondhand I sometimes get leather so have dianites put on when theleather wears out. Stick on rubber helps grip and lasts ages too - but worth getting the cobbler to do it rather than diy

A guy at worked bought a pair of Crockett & Jones loafers, so it takes all sorts I suppose. For those unfamiliar, Crocketts are outstanding quality, but loafers ?
Nothing wrong with a good pair of loafers.

I bought these Loake boots just over 2 years ago. I haven't worn them much as I kind of went off black soon after I bought them. I think they were a 'you've come all this way, so you can't go home empty handed purchase'. I tried them again yesterday, but took them off before I went out as when I look at them in a mirror, to me they look like riding boots. I could sell them for say £50 on fleabay, but all I'd do with the 50 quid would be to put it towards more shoes/boots.

I have an identical (but leather soled) pair that I bought in a sale at Watkinsons in York about ten years ago. They're still going despite my best attempts to wear them out on regular all weather commutes. I have to admit that they're not my favourites and I decided after a while that the fitting was a bit too wide for me, but they always seem to attract positive comments.

I think we have a pair of those in the shop I work in, though they are small, about size 7 or 8.🤔
Mine are 8.5, do need a bit of wearing in, but I like them.

Yes, I also think they are a bit too wide, but like I said they were an impulse buy and I ignored the F (wide) fitting sign on the box.

Like you, I also got compliments when wearing them. I remember a bloke once saying to me while out "Nice pair of Loakes"!. How did he work out they were Loakes in the few seconds as I walked by I've always wondered? 🤔

Seeing that I've just struggled to pull them on for that pic' I'm gonna keep them on when I go out in a while, to 'gauge public opinion'.;)

Keep them and wear them! I’ve a similar pair from Church’s, but a bit rounder on the toe, more like a dealer boot. They take a battering but still look good.

Once a Wheeler

Most things from this marque look expensive until you suddenly realize that the item is in its tenth year, still looks sharp and has saved its entire price in dry-cleaning bills because it is fully washable. Should you tire of an item which is still wearable, you can use their Gift Your Gear scheme to hand it on to a second wearer and get a discount off its brand-new replacement. There is a place for Primark, but this puts Primark in its place.
