Not a cafe but this thread has strayed far away from the thread title already...

I went to the Gong bar on the 52nd floor of the Shard with a couple of friends on Sunday (one had their birthday)...

5 cocktails (and not the extra posh ones), two 330ml bottles of Meantime pale ale, 5 veggie Gyoza (I'd missed lunch) and 4 little pots of 'free' nuts/corn snacks...

Total bill £168.75

Yes, I realise you're paying for the view in a 5 star hotel bar but I'll only go again if someone else is paying!!
Luckily they restrict your table occupancy to 90 minutes!!

We did something similar as a treat using some Red Letter Days vouchers work had given me when I left….but higher up, the Top of the Shard experience (floors 69-72 🤪)
Cocktail plus 5 glasses of champagne for the 5 of us (barman miscounted 💪), it was a beautiful afternoon for it too!
Always lovely when someone else is paying 🤣👍

But that was a very basic car, and average salary in 1948 was £350 per year. About 1.3 times average salary.

The cheapest defender, which would be the nearest equivalent is £48,350, with average salary about 28,000. So about 1.7 times average salary.

So still more, but not all that much more in real terms, and a lot more features, even for the most basic model.

Although inflation calcs online suggest £450 in 1948 should be a shade under £20k today…. 🤷‍♂️

We traveled to Malaysia back in 2007 and stayed in one of the Shangri La hotels. It had been very highly ranked internationally but had dropped off. The owners then decided to demolish and rebuild it.

We went shortly after the rebuild and had an incredible stay, the cost for which was very reasonable and no more than we would have paid for a week in an average hotel in Spain. This was during the time they were rebuilding their reputation. They have obviously achieved that and a weeks stay in a similar room now would cost in the region of £15,000 plus flights and transfers.

Needless to say we will not be returning. It was good but not that good.
