My mate taught himself how to build and setup guitars. He has taken some very budget ones and set them up properly so they play like a high end guitar. I think there is a certain amount of snobbery and the assumption that because they're old then they're worth a lot. It could be that back then they were made a lot better and there was more quality control? I also once played my mate's guitar which he got used for £1500, and I wasn't especially impressed

They're like bikes, aren't they. Cheapo ones are a bit rubbish, mid price ones are absolutely fine, high price ones are unnecessary but if you fancy spending that amount then knock yourself out, daft price ones are daft.

Or buy a 72 custom with a humbucker at the neck for those lovely bluesy tones and thick rock sound and a regular single coil and Tele bridge at the back for that country twang. All in one guitar!
When I saw the Hives earlier this year I watched a rig rundown where the interviewer asked Nicholas Arson about the options from the selector switch on his 75 custom. Rather than the usual list he simply said that he didn't think it worked so there was only one.

For my sins I've been getting into Squeeze recently and learning a few of their basslines.

Squeeze are great... always have been, always will be. :becool:

In other news... I'm toying with adding a compressor to my fledgling pedal collection. I've been looking at some budget pedal reviews on YT but still feel a bit lost. One has a switch to select between single coil and humbucker pick-ups. Is that necessary or just a gimmick? Some have a 'blend' to mix the dry and compressed signal, some don't... again, useful or a gimmick?

Any tips or recommendations?
