September update and last weekend warning ,We have 17 riders fully posted up leaving 7 riders with rides up to August yet to declare so a nudge for @Spinney ,@Bazzer ,@slow scot ,@Chap sur le velo ,@C R ,@FrothNinja ,@Spartak and @Gibbo9
Well done everyone who's made this far were 3/4 of the way there
Yes I was aware of the end of the month galloping towards me, but thank you.
A pleasant break with Mrs B, daughter 2 being involved in a serious RTA and pouring down whenever I was free has wrecked this month.
Anyway, managed to get out for a couple of hours or so this morning.

September Ride ... ✅

Took advantage of a dry day and headed to Severn Beach.
Nice to do a leisurely ride [ too much work lately ].

Cafe in Severn Beach was closed when I got there so headed north to the town of Thornbury, where I enjoyed a sausage & egg muffin w/ coffee for £4.75 at Shelly's Cafe, a good old greasy spoon.

Following what could best be described as a ‘farming accident’, my whole village was denied internet access for nearly a month. We finally got re-connected on Wednesday so I’ve had a lot of catching up to do since then.

I’m now up-to-date with this challenge and have done my qualifying ride for September. I’ve posted lots of multi-bike rides for August – I’m really not sure that I want to keep posting these in detail. They aren’t qualifying rides and I’ve really only posted them to explain/reconcile my points tally. As this is just for me maybe, from now on, I’ll just provide a basic summary of these rides. Anyone got any views on this?

I’m very much in two minds as to whether I’ll stay in this Challenge in 2025. I would prefer to concentrate on longer rides .. I find it frustrating to stop at 50km and I much prefer to do rides over 80km – for the Lunacy Distance challenge and to improve my Eddington numbers (Imperial and Metric). I really don’t know how @13 rider manages to stay on top of three distance challenges – that’s very impressive.

Anyway, I’ll finish this year off and see how I feel in January.

I can't see a reply to this, but why do you feel you have to stop at 50km? Surely a ride of 80km+ still qualifies for this challenge?

Am I missing the point?

Yes, it would .. but I'm also doing the Lunacy Distance challenge - with a target this year of 76km. I don't believe in double-posting challenge rides so, if I did an 80km ride, it would be posted in the Lunacy thread - not here as well.

In previous years it's not been a problem doing both 50km and 80km rides each month - a minimum of 12 rides in this challenge and 13 more in the Lunacy Distance .. but I'm getting old and finding it a bit of a strain. Whilst I've still got some 80km rides in my legs, I want to do the Lunacy challenge and push up my Eddington numbers before it gets to the point where they're no longer possible. In which case, I would expect that I'd rejoin this challenge.

Hope that make sense

As you hopefully know there's no actual rules about posting a ride in more than 1 challenge , but like you I do not feel it is correct to do so . Each month I do a metric and imperial century ride for those challenges then any other riders over 100km go into this challenge . As the distance for this challenge is not overly taxing for me ,I feel if I stay healthy and injury free I can also tick of a 50km ride so just the 2 longer ones to focus on

Yes @13 rider I know there aren’t actually any written rules preventing double-counting rides across more than one challenge. Two or three years ago, I tried to get the Lunacy Distance rules changed to stop it happening but I wasn’t successful. I won’t say any more about what was said back then as I’d probably end up breaching the forum rules.

One other thing I’d like to add to avoid any confusion ... I’ve already done 13 rides over 86km this year in the 2024 Lunacy Distance challenge. So any more rides that I do in the remainder of this year that fall between 50km and 85km will be posted here in the HMCAM challenge instead.

I’d also like to make the point that Lunacy Distance challenge rides – and Eddington Number calculations – are based on total distance over the entirety of a day. I find this is much more suited to my daily cycling these days .. I’ve often found that I’ve done 30/40km before coming home for lunch – then going out and doing a similar distance in the afternoon/early evening.

I’m curious to know if there’s any appetite for a rule change to allow these split rides to qualify for the HMCAM challenge? If these were allowed, I’d definitely stay in this challenge until I become too old to get on my bike.

Or .. as a wild conjecture – is there any appetite for a new challenge where this is allowed (perhaps only open to those over 70 years old)?

You've had going down a rabbit hole of finding out what the actual rules are ,answer very few , My belief is that your allowed 24hrs to complete the ride from starting but this is not stated anywhere I can find but is a statement I made on a pm in 2018 and I and sticking too it . As this challenge is a personal challenge and if the rider is happy to post a split ride like you mention I have nothing against it after all is only like an extended cafe stop . Where I do feel the spirit of the challenge is broken is a 16 mile commute to work a days work then the commute home as this definitely feels like 2 rides to me but again nothing in the rules against it . At the end of the day the whole idea and ethos of the challenge is to get people out riding doing perhaps a few extra miles however these miles are accrued outside . I'd like to keep the challenge as friendly and informal as possible and don't see the need for loads of rules ,I just let people ride to their understanding of the spirit of the challenge .

I wasn't planning to do the October ride today - it happened by accident. With the weather forecast being wet & windy for later on I popped out just to do my usual extended shopping loop into Felixstowe and back. When I got into town I realised that I'd not picked up the D-lock so went home, grabbed the lock and back out on the extended shopping loop again. Home for the 2nd time and I realised that a quick 10 mile loop via Kirton while the rain was still just to the north & west would get the October challenge banker done so off out again!
Now I can enjoy the salted caramel iced bun that came free from Lidl.

That's me off the mark for October after a very poor September for me with only 3 qualifying rides and a low mileage month for me this month hasn't started well with the weather 💦💦 and me getting a bug 🤢🤢 over the weekend but on the mend but not 100% so a steadier ride today
Sadly I failed to record a ride in September for a number of reasons, so I am out.

Good luck to all of you still in.
Sorry to here this ,hope your back for next year
