With it being 25c+ in UK I am guessing there won't be much interest in a race Thursday? Shall I set up this month stating next Thursday or October

Hi all!

I’m sure some of you might have wondered why we haven’t heard from @Randyberlin on the forum or Strava these last few weeks. So I have been given the OK to make a post about why.

As some of you know, Randy embarked on his Scandinavian Tour (Denmark->Sweden->Norway->Denmark) this June - after a couple of years of postponement due to first COVID and then some other stuff.
He landed in Denmark, took the ferry to Sweden and rode along the coast, around 100 km pr. day. He had lost some weight leading up to the tour, was feeling great, enjoying both the scenery and the long days in the saddle. The temperatures here in Denmark was around 25-30C those days, so really hot, and I suspect around the same in Norway/Sweden. :heat:

As he was closing in on Kristiansand in Norway (where there is a ferry to Denmark), I contacted him to schedule a meetup when he hit my parts of Denmark. His Strava didn’t show any updates reaching Kristiansand and he didn’t reply immediately, so either he was offline for some reason or some thing had happened...

Unfortunately the latter... Just outside Skien in Norway, he was going up a climb and next thing he knows, found himself in an ambulance! He was taken to the local hospital, where they did all sorts of tests but didn’t find anything. So after 12 hours, they let him go, and he continued a few miles to catch a train and after that a stay at a hotel. Next day he took the ferry to Denmark and was riding the short route to the next hotel. But he suddenly felt dizzy and literally passed out, before he could make a complete stop. Thankfully, a woman found him and had already called an ambulance before he woke up.

He was then taken to the hospital in Aalborg and immediately went to the Cardiac ward, where they concluded he had had a heart attack in both Norway and Denmark. They did multiple tests including ECG and heart catheterizations and found that he should have a pacemaker installed. He had one fitted on June 19 and after a few days flew back to Sitka on June 24.

After that he of course had to take it easy and plan for the future. So I haven’t been “bothering” him since. 😊 But people on here started asking about him this week, and I gave the lowdown in a private message to @berty bassett who then contacted Randy.

I had hoped for a “I’m doing great and will be on the bike shortly”, but unfortunately things didn’t play out that way...

He had been feeling “normal” at home for some days, but suddenly felt bad again and was first taken to urgent care, had an x-ray and was then admitted to the local hospital and the next day to the bigger hospital in Seattle, as there was no improvement in his condition.

There he has been since, and is currently waiting to get listed for a heart transplant.

I sincerely hope to see him back on the forum and bike sooner rather than later, but please give him some time to put this whole ordeal behind him, and I’m sure he will return!

Thanks for reading – and a huge GET WELL SOON to you @Randyberlin !!

/Steen

PS: I don’t know the state of his bike!!! 🙃
OMG! Did not see this till now, hope Randy is doing better and all our best wishes from the Duckman household. Will try to reach out and see if we can be of any assistance in any way. Many thanks to you all for keeping us updated on things.
