Geoff, how did the Gorge go?
Turned out to be a really nice day and it was great to get back out on the bike in nice warm weather. Fingerless gloves and sleeveless jersey, no less.
Thanks for the route, it really helped!
We started at Cheddar and not being warmed up and never having cycled up the Gorge in real life before, I messed up the start bit. It was a really busy Bank Holiday and the main segment seems to start right at the bottom of the tourist bit, so riding up through the village with pedestrians and cars stopping, etc. was very distracting (I was chatting with another cyclist we met).
I only really realised it was the climb proper as we started to turn left into the actual Gorge, and I then forgot to switch on the video camera! D'oh. I was too knackered to do it again at the end, I'll have to go back sometime.
I did manage to video most of Barrington Combe, but also messed up that Segment as we stopped at the Inn for lunch, so the segment time was over an hour! Nice Bacon and Cheese baguette though.
There was one quite alarmingly steep climb coming up from Blagdon Lake, thankfully short, and a few of the roads around there were in appalling condition, so next time we go I'll try and avoid them.
All in all, a lovely day and we'll definitely be going back again.
I'll probably upload the little video of the Burrington Coombe climb from the Inn to the top.
I was riding with a friend who has done no training all winter and this was his first proper ride out this year, so outside of the climbs we had a very relaxed pace, and it was really nice just to relax and enjoy the scenery.
I would say that back at the beginning of November we would have been quite closely matched, but with him doing no training and me on the Bkool all winter, he did comment on how much fitter I was.
I haven't had much time yet to compare my times on the KICKR with the times in reality, but at first glance they are not that far apart, and on a couple of the short steep sections of the Gorge I was actually faster in real life, which is surprising.
You can see on this one I lost 22 seconds dawdling and chatting at the bottom, then made it all back and got nearly 30 seconds ahead until I gave back some of that on the steep tight bit, much harder in real life!
I'd say that was a testament to the realism of the KICKR ...
