A winter's day. The sun is shining brightly on the mountaintops, but down here in the valley it's dark and cool. Once I leave Laruns, the route leads up a narrow, rocky gorge with a sheer wall on one side. The surface is damp, and in places there are traces of snow and ice at the side of the road. Gradually, the valley widens but always there is the climb. Sometimes the sun peeps between the mountains and blinds me, but mostly I'm in shadow.
A village comes and goes. Les Eaux Chaudes. Quite run-down, but it must be hard to make a living in this sort of country.
What's that in front? Looks like a giant brick wall! It is! It's a dam. The road turns to the right to climb up and around it. Getting quite high now, and much more exposed. Here's a car that seems to have slid off the road and the back end is in a ditch. There's nothing I can do to help, so I keep going.
Wow, an alpine pasture. Do I go through it? No, the road keeps to the side of it and continues to climb. There is snow under the walls quite regularly now, but the road itself is clear. I'm at the snowline and seeing much more of the sun. The finish can't be far away.
Those buildings ahead must be it. Yes, I can see that there's a canopy over the road like a petrol station forecourt. That's the end - the border between France and Spain. Made it, but so tired.
And all without leaving the house
