On a more relevant and less futile issue, I have been wondering about what I can do to improve my sustained power while keeping my heart rate within limits?

After 4-5 months of chasing @BILL S and @Add up Alphe d'Huez, etc. I was able to sustain around 300 Watts on a KICKR (so probably more on a Bkool), but after a year not cycling, and now that I have to keep my heart rate below around 150-160, I have to back off to around half that (or less), and anything sustained over 10% is pretty much ruled out. I'd like to get up the hills around here to get access to the longer rides beyond them, hills like the Merry Harriers, which is around 1.3 km and sustains 12-14%, so I need to strengthen my legs, and improve the efficiency of my cardio vascular system.

Two years ago, when I was Active 10, I could ride up that hill gently with my heart rate around 145-150 (chatting to my Wife and her friends), so it should still be possible, if I can get fitter/stronger. Also, my resting heart rate had fallen into the 40's but now is back around 70 as it always used to be.

So I need exercises or cycling routines that will strengthen my legs and increase my FTP, but without exerting myself. High intensity training is just too dangerous for me.

I have also been thinking about cadence, as I know high cadence is a way of transferring effort away from the leg muscles to the cardio vascular system, and this worked well for me in the past. However, it seems that high cadence increases the heart rate, so logically, if I train at lower cadence could I reduce my heart rate and hopefully strengthen my leg muscles?

Anything that puts up heart rate or blood pressure must be avoided, but it would be nice to be able to ride up the middling climbs, even if at a more moderate pace than I used to manage.

Geoff - Did you not pursue the electric bike option you were looking at last year. Wouldn't that be a way of controlling the heart rate on the steep bits to get you to the top, so you could then enjoy the longer rides at your own pace.

To enjoy the decent rides around where I live I need to do a lot of climbing, and at my age it will be something I probably need to look at in the not too distant future - watch out for a dramatic improvement in my handicap times and you'll know I've gotten the bullet.

Hope you find a decent solution so as to enjoy the summer months out in the real world.

Bob should you ever need this service I think between us we could now write quite a compelling Tinder profile for you.

"Hi, my name is @bobinski and I like nothing better than to dress in tight fitting Lycra and head up into my loft to sweat for a couple of hours.
I do have a gammy knee and low blood pressure and have been known to pass out whilst taking a dump but on the plus side thanks to bran I am now (largely) the master of my own bowels.
So if you fancy meeting me for a bit of sweaty Zwifting splitter action you know which way you need to swipe.
P.s. did I mention my knee? (TM)"
I was literally choking on my sandwich love it:laugh:

So I have just got a power tap back wheel Will it make any difference in zwift on a bkool pro and will it make any difference in bkool ?
Got it mainly to go out THERE in really world but if it helps zwift it might be stuck on turbo
Still think zwift is generous by not making hills as hard as bkool
Stick with the bkool trainer in bkool. My power meter under reads according to bkool and when used as the primary signal source, it destroys any progress I make.

I don't :girldance: zwift, so can make no comment.

I've been using this platform for over 2 years now . I have just discovered a way of deleting an unwanted scheduled session. It is so simple it should be obvious . If you can edit the session, go to the details tab, set the date to yesterday or before, click edit. You then get taken back to the scheduled sessions list and the unwanted session is gone.

Why has it taken so long for me to work this out? :banghead::banghead::banghead:

Go with the dual sided power meter, pedals or cranks. Then you can compare irl/w rides with virtual ones :bicycle:. Then you can join lbhifi, myself and others in wondering why bkool reads 10-30 watts more most of the time
Chuffin' heck I've just looked at power meters and am now wondering if I can justify several hundred quid to make Zwift work better. Now into the realms of new trainer money.
