My max to be fair is 175 (pretty poor), i need to get fit, 15.5 st riding a venge bike outside doesnt sound great when i go down a hole ;-p

Whast your level on bkool burn??

The same as you at the moment...there's nothing wrong with your stats dude....my max is about 185...but normally sit around 160...how do you find the venge riding position comfortable?

Not comfortable at all, i have mine drilled down so it forces me down lower, i'm not looking forward to Liege-bastogne-liege this year riding on it, i may go buy a cheap roubaix.

Bloody quick bike though when you get going, i still think aesthetically its one of the nicest nikes to look at, i will take a picture of my pain cave

All this HR gets me confused, all the calcs say my max hr is about 174-179 (depending on model used). I am 45. In last nights Dipford loop 'group ride/ all out race' I averaged 180 and maxed at 184.

Is this good, bad, or doesn't it really matter??? I sustained the 180 for the entire ride and then went on to do another with a slight lower average (170 ish).

Does this mean I'm reasonable fit or should I see the doc? Or are there too many other variables to it that I can only really understand by doing a proper fitness assessment?

What's your resting heart rate kipster....from what I've seen of your rides you seem fit enough to me....power to weight ratio vo2 max are seen by many as better ways of testing fitness

I never knew veloviewer did a signature lol i hardly use strava at the minute i need to find time to upload all my rides, i rode hard in 2012/13 didn't really ride anything at all last year and put 2 stone on

Was it a really hard ride last night Kipster? i think there would be more variables to determine 'fitness' and there are different types of fitness... depends on your goals

I don't think I have any set goals. Resting heart rate is 55 ish. Last nights ride was hard, I was pushing it, and I was breathing hard on the ride and for a few moments after. My heart rate drops quite quickly, from 180 to 140 in 90 - 120 seconds. I don't feel knackered after a ride like that, just a moment to catch my breath and a little longer to stop sweating profusely. weight wise I'm 82kg, and 6ft 3 inches, the last ftp test was 3.1 watt /kg, on a Salcombe hill ride I got up to 4.1 watt/kg, but that was only a 5 minute ride. No idea about my vo2 max.

I was always under the impression the lower your heart rate going flat out the fitter you are meaning your heart doesn't have to work as hard to sustain max effort.

I struggle to get my heart rate over 175 even on tough climbs when I'm gasping for breath and my legs are killing.

I'm 34, 5 foot 11 and 12 stone.

That is not correct, when you are going flat out, you are going flat out, as such your heart is invariably working at its maximum, by definition. If it wasn't then you wouldn't be going flat out. The difference with a more highly trained rider is that they will be producing more power.
