That is not correct, when you are going flat out, you are going flat out, as such your heart is invariably working at its maximum, by definition. If it wasn't then you wouldn't be going flat out. The difference with a more highly trained rider is that they will be producing more power.

That makes more sense!

How do I get involved with the 5pm race tomorrow then? Still can't find my way around bkool very well

I don't think I have any set goals. Resting heart rate is 55 ish. Last nights ride was hard, I was pushing it, and I was breathing hard on the ride and for a few moments after. My heart rate drops quite quickly, from 180 to 140 in 90 - 120 seconds. I don't feel knackered after a ride like that, just a moment to catch my breath and a little longer to stop sweating profusely. weight wise I'm 82kg, and 6ft 3 inches, the last ftp test was 3.1 watt /kg, on a Salcombe hill ride I got up to 4.1 watt/kg, but that was only a 5 minute ride. No idea about my vo2 max.
Bast*rd! I'm also 6'3", and 82 kg... Is where I'd love to be! 95 it is, alas

Turn up before 5pm and look in the live tab of the simulator for Dipford Loop to appear at around 5:00pm, then start it and check it is me (Geoff) sitting on the start line, along with hopefully other Thursday nighters (or Saturday tea-timers). Warm up along with the rest of us and when the count down stops, ride the course with us.

If you can't see it try using the filter at the bottom of the simulator, and used the advanced find to look for Dipford ...

Hope to see you there ...

Cheers,

Geoff

I use the filter and advanced find to search for 'Geoff', hasn't failed me so far.

Will do thank you. Warm up on alp de huez tomorrow morning.

When I look at the Thursday group it states no future listings on the calendar. Am I looking in the wrong place for future rides or is the website rubbish.

Hi there, I have just noticed that my heart rate on the fitness zones on bkool goes upto 188 but the maximum I have ever measured goes upto 178 on an all out effort. Is this calculated by the program or can I input it manually somehow?

I think it's calculated by the software based on age, probably 220 - age, making you about 32?

Just did sa calobra and bkool failed to upload it. It said it would be uploaded next time I logged in but everytime it failed. Then it said it had tried to many times and wouldn't try again. How can I rescue the ride?

I used to be 97kg at my heaviest, two years on the bike helped get my weight down, cutting right down on my alcohol intake also helped. My wife agrees with you that I am a bast@rd!!
15 kg's off, impressive. i have trimmed from 105 kgs over the last 2 years, would like to go down to 90 though, another 5 to go. I don't think 82kg is a realistic target for me!

Pretty sure it works out your heart rate zones from your FTP tests, alongside your power zones.

I think it takes your average heart rate during the test (along with your average power) and calls that your LTHR (lactate threshold (or functional threshold) heart rate) then applies percentages for each zone. If you've never done an FTP test, it can also take it from any ride that is 30 minutes or longer (it should look at the hardest 20 minutes), though it only seems to do this if your average power is higher than your current FTP power.

At my last FTP test my average Heart Rate was 161, so my LTHR is 161.

Z4 is around your LTHR (c. 98% - 110%)
Z5 is above your LTHR (c. 110% - 111%)
Z6 (c. 111%) is not really your max, as that would be more accurate if you just rode harder and harder until you reached a plateau or passed out/threw up/died. It's just sufficiently above your LTHR to be very likely that you are working anaerobically and will be able to sustain that rate only for a limited time.

Heart rate is much more variable than power, and depends on so many other factors, hence it is only really a rough guide to effort.

My maximum heart rate on the road was 185 bpm around 2 years ago, climbing Salcombe Hill. I'be got no where near that since, probably because I've got fitter (from a cardio vascular point of view) and my legs struggle to sustain the power where my heart rate would hit that again.

I also think some of that heart rate was due to fear, as I was well outside my comfort zone and expecting to fall before I got to the top or managed to unclip my pedals!
