I think most authors would prefer the option plus it keeps alive the wit, humour etc.

I've seen a few cases of 'estates' who inherit the copyright just flogging rights to everybody and anybody to make quick money.
Some won't take it gracefully when the cash cow eventually runs out, no need for Sherlock to work that one....
