Thanks but no thanks. I think I'll pass.

WD, I don't know how well you know the lanes around your way, do you have an OS Landranger map for your area? I find them just the right scale for spotting the nice quiet little roads.

If you fancy meeting folk, you can always post in the relevant bit of the forum, find out if there's someone nearby. As long as you're honest about how far and fast you want to ride, and how many cafe stops you fancy, you might find some folk who fancy a pootle.

Thanks for that. Not far and not very fast. I might give it a go. I do have some os maps. but usually I just go down a lane and see where it goes.

Sat nav won't help you plan routes. You always need a map for that. Unless you are happy for the dumb software to navigate you the (main road route) it wants to use.

To be honest I don't go that far. The furthest I have been is about 10 miles. There is a nice little pootle around that I have done, mostly off road following the river dovey mainly, then onto the A489 and then home. I started a bit late last year. I am hoping to start really getting out and about in the spring. And I want to increase my mileage as well.

Mr D has loads of maps. I nearly threw them all away as I thought they were out of date especially now there are sat navs, but I am glad I didn't.

There may be the odd bit of road that's changed, depending on the age of the maps, but mostly they will be fine. The bits that change most tend to be motorways and big fast roads, not the lanes you want.

If you can 'read' the contours, then planning a route on an OS map might help you find ways around some of the hills too, or find a long slow ascent instead of a steep one and so on.

Thanks Arch. Much appreciated.

You will need the map soon then  It's all part of the fun of exploring your part of the world - plotting routes and finding stuff ^_^

I'll get Mr Dragon to dig them out for me. TO be honest people around here are really friendly. everyone knows everyone else, so If I do get lost, then someone will help me.
Yep - a polite ask is all you need at times. But if you really are delving deep into little used lanes you'll be surprised how few of the "locals" know much about them:rolleyes:
