Tales from today's commute....

A nice fast commute this morning, aided by that wind. It'll be a nightmare going home. So fast I thought I'd get the early train only to find it cancelled, and my usual roll on platform had to be changed to one involving stairs! I get on and tie up the bike only for them to announce another platform change. Thinking it was the later train there a guard confirmed it was the other platform. As we were standing there yet another platform alteration was announced, back to the one I'd originally tied up the bike on 🤦‍♂️

Absolutely flying this morning, tailwind, Friday halfterm.

2mph faster average speed, 3 whole minutes faster than earlier in the week, 5 cf the cold busy week before. Such fun.

Yep the same for me. On the big boys bike too today. Rolled in at a great rate of knots. No one else on the train and very little traffic.
I was very lucky that on arriving into Bromley the heavens opened. But by the time I got off the train, up the stars and on my way the rain had stopped. Disconcertingly mild this morning too.

I remember Bromley, I got the train there for a couple of years living in our maisonette in Southland Court enroute to Victoria. It's probably a grotty place now though. Wasn't so bad then.

Cycling back from my Aldi trip today, I was aware of a Transit sized van behind me. Being loaded with the weekly shop, my Brommy was heavy laden so I wasn't exactly speeding down the road, probably about 12 - 14mph.
Despite there being plenty of opportunity to overtake safely, they resolutely stayed behind me for the 600 metres or so until I turned off to my left - !
Being cautious or wot - ? !

Woke up this morning after a weekend of doing more important stuff (wife off this weekend so shops and general chauffer work that going to change and come an end) weather pants normally I would ride but now how drivers in this part of the world are complete tossers in this sort of weather. Got in the car this morning and proved right almost forced off the road three times on the way into work. How hard is it drive with due care and attention, its must be rocket science or something.

Most of my commute now is a blast along the very busy A21. Over the past few years they've been slowly resurfacing the road with lovely new, smooth tarmac and turning one lane into a 24 hour bus lane. Its bloody brilliant blasting nearly interrupted apart from the junctions past hundreds of backed up motor vehicles. Love it.

I so nearly got wet with rain this morning. I got to the train station dry. Waiting for the train the heavens opened for most of the train journey, only stopping 5 minutes before the train got to Bromley. Ended up being dry on the ride in to work.

Saw an old cycling commuting chum near work. First time he's seen me on the new (ish) folder. Nice to have a quick chat on the rest of the ride in.

"Highlights" from the past 1.5 days..

Yesterday was a lovely mild, somewhat clear morning. Tired already I took it steady and the waft towards the city felt more akin to relaxing in an armchair than dragging myself to work. Passed fellow CC'er @Rocky again; despite his apparent efforts to escape my attention by wearing a different colour coat

Unfortunately the sheer pleasure of just being out turned to anger and anxiety upon finding a slow puncture on the rear at Folly Bridge. I elected not to fix it immediately and instead limped to work stopping several times to stuff more air up it / occasionally push.

Further investigation revealed the cause was yet again a thorn courtesy of the dickhead hedge-butchers of Yarnton - the second puncture they've caused in as many commutes... lazy wastes of skin that they evidently are

Thankfully the journey home was more pleasant; leaving work knackered but quickly buoyed by the lovely spring-like evening ultimately causing me to push the distance out to about 16 miles with a lovely jungle soundtrack

This morning was better than yesteday - walking the bike past the shredded vestages of hedge littering the tow path to avoid any more punctures, and progressing steadily from there due to being even more knackered than the day before.

This was a journey of "interactions" with large vehicles - notably the bus that started pulling out accross me from the bus station on George St as they sometimes do - the look of absolute disgust the driver got was enough to make him stop to let me past; I waved, he smiled, all was good..

Second was a bus driver on the High St. who evidently was unaware of the purpose of the shiney rectangular things hanging off the sides of his vehicle - slowly pulling out from a stop across me as I approached at speed, right over to the centre of the road. I was level with the cab with the distance down to maybe 2-3ft before he clocked me out of the side window and pulled back in sharpish..

Finally was a delivery wagon on the Cowley Rd. I joined other cyclists in cutting through the static traffic, switching from one side of the road to the next to get around the randomly-distributed cars. Getting to the front of the queue I started to pass a wagon on the inside, only to find it begin to slowly turn left across me. Credit to the driver for checking his inside mirror and stopping to let me pass.... although of course I'd not have been passing in the first place had he used those blinky orange things on the sides of his vehicle to signal his intent to those around him..

Anyway, no harm done and for the first time this year (and dickheads notwithstanding) the commutes so far this week have felt really enjoyable in the conspicuously milder temperatures
