Hello XX,
After you beeped your horn at me aggressively this morning, it was good to be able to have a chat about it in the car park. Thanks for taking the time to have a quick conversation with me.
I was struck by some of the points you raised – specifically that you felt a cyclist “shouldn’t be in the road” because a shared use path is available, and that I was “slowing you down”.
I have taken the time to share a few points from the highway code (
https://www.gov.uk/guidance/the-highway-code) which are relevant to our interaction on XXX Road this morning:
Rule 61
Cycle Routes and Other Facilities. Use cycle routes, advanced stop lines, cycle boxes and toucan crossings unless at the time it is unsafe to do so.
Use of these facilities is not compulsory and will depend on your experience and skills, but they can make your journey safer.
Rule 163
Overtake only when it is safe and legal to do so. You should
· …
· give motorcyclists, cyclists and horse riders at least as much room as you would when overtaking a car (see
Rules 211 to 215).
Rule 112
The horn. Use only while your vehicle is moving and you need to warn other road users of your presence.
Never sound your horn aggressively.
I trust that we can share the road peacefully in the future. I will continue to cycle on the road wherever I feel it is the safest option, and do not expect you to sound your horn at me aggressively as you overtake.
Thank you for passing me safely, you did give me enough space and did not pass with excessive speed so that is really appreciated.
I am more than happy to discuss my cycling in more detail if you would you like – you can find my contact details at the bottom of this note, or my office is in the XXX area.
