Rebecca, FYI: 1. LCC are organising a ride, I guess a pootle, to Box Hill starting Richmond I believe and 2. Her Welshness is organising a pootle re London's lost rivers starting Bermondsey. I might do either of these or perhaps make a dash out to RP and beyond

Thanks, gbs. I'm aware of those. Both will indeed be great pootles for those wanting to explore, admire & learn about their surroundings and socialise.

What I'm looking for in particular is a regular Sunday ride-out with people faster than me (not hard to find, surely?!), which will challenge me and 'force' me to improve, especially my speed (both average and top) and technique on hills - though not both issues together, at least not for a few months!

At the moment, I am not quite able to keep up with Addiscombe CC's '15' group. They do run rides slower than a 15mph average but only once a month. Likewise I believe with Dulwich Paragon, though I haven't been out with them (yet) because frankly Crystal Palace as a starting point is a turn-off for me... I mean, starting the day by going straight UP?! No thanks!

The usual Sunday rides from HPC tend to be a pootle rather than anything quick.

Have you considered coming on the Olympic Road Race route ride on Saturday 14th? That'll be around 15mph and leave from HPC

After the Christmas lay-off and other distractions a pootle is not on my agenda for anytime soon.

I am thinking of a dash westwards Sunday say to Weybridge, from HPC at 0830 via HP, Hammersmith Bridge (but avoiding the gyratory system), RP with possibility of elaboration in RP if more vertical is required, Bushey Park, Hampton Court, Walton Bridge. Kaffepaus at Sunbury Walled Garden or the cafes at Hampton Court Bridge after about 45 k. Return Via RP where you may grind up Dark Hill and the shorter and the steeper Broomfield Hill if you wish to work off the pastries. Home for lunch with time to spare.

Thanks everybody for the suggestions. This weekend (tomorrow) I will do Francis Sedgemore's Hoo Peninsula ride (130km). Next weekend I may be out of town. The following weekend I am thinking of doing this (recommended by AnythingButVanilla of this parish), then I'm audaxing the following weekend. So I guess it'll continue to be a case of searching for the right ride one weekend at a time... As for shorter training bursts, I guess I could try improving my commute times!

On second reading, this is very tempting.... may I let you know tomorrow evening if I'm up for it?

Susie is planning to go to cycle to Ramsgate and I intend to accompany her......we'd go through Greenwich at about 7.30. A slightly longer route than last week's, but without the bonus hill east of Canterbury

gosh - spoilt for choice now! DZ, I'll phone you later today, okay?
