Oddly enough, we went for a walk on Dartmoor on Tuesday and there were still small patches of snow up there. The car said it was 3C outside

Because, it stays at zero till all of it has melted

”If the ambient temperature around a piece of ice increases, the temperature of the ice will increase as well. However, this steady increase in temperature stops as soon as the ice reaches its melting point. At this point, the ice undergoes a change of state and turns into liquid water, and its temperature won't change until all of it has melted.

Has anyone noticed how these storms now always seem to strike on a Friday and Saturday?

It’s to do with the train strikes, solidarity my brothers and sisters

They often use the phrase "feels like" when giving the extreme windchill figure not pass it off as the actual temperature. They use the air temperature prediction not the windchill, but it is often good to give the "feels like" temperature too as that is what people, well feel!!! No conspiracy there.

Its simplez, if they say it's 0,° with a minus interga, then it's going to be Farqing cold.
If the wind force is stated as FC 7 and above, then it's sure fecking going to be drafty, I don't need added intel ,feels like ,I knows like.....having enjoyed the outdoors for work & pleasure (???)
If you're any sense in your bonce ,you pay heed to what the weatherman said and dress accordingly.
It's looking grim tonight, but I still take the bus to go to the pub, ordinarily I'd cycle.
.......but in this, .....I'm not daft, by half!

My work has decided to close tomorrow (a day care centre, so don't want our service users risking injury making their way to the centre).
The down side is, I now get to stay at home listening to whatever damage this storm is more than likely going to cause to my roof. I reckon 60 mph is the wind speed at which the slates start to come off, and they are saying we will get gusts of 90+. We are right in the middle of the red warning zone.
Sorry @Marchrider , but these storms are about as much "fun" as a colonoscopy.

We in the Shire, generally thumb out noses at the Proles, in my little corner of the SE , we get the least of all the elements, it's the driest ,calmest, warmest speck of crud in the Shires,
But sit out on the Prom sometimes and you could be forgiven thinking that.....

Did you all get the UK Gov wind alert on your phones?

As expected City of Edinburgh Council have announced closure of all schools, libraries, gyms, museums, theatres, galleries and parks tomorrow. Seeing on FB quite a few of the local cafes announcing the same.
Similar here. Not heard of parks closing though, all the ones I know don't have gates.

Here it should be 12 noon when it's at its worst.
I need to be at work by 7am, so will assess the situation tomorrow at 6am.
If not too bad, I will cycle, my commute is only about 3 miles.
Plan B is for my supervisor to pick me up en route on her car.
Tbh, being in a car in the middle of a hurricane does not reassure me at all!
And that’s news that no buses will be running here after 10am tomorrow. All Lothian RT buses cancelled.
You made me check this: First Bus also have suspended services, from 8am tomorrow.
I guess quite a few of my colleagues won't make it in.
We work in a hospital

Hogmanay all over. Flashbacks of our holiday there end of last year. I think Edinburgh cancels anything at the drop of a snowflake. It was only a bit of a breeze! they could have continued with a few thousands holding lit torches in a compressed body of people in the torchlight procession.
