Hint - Without the spaces filled with 'Air', you wouldn't have a crumple zone, you would have a solid lump of metal. What happens to the energy in the crumple zone when it is deforming ?
Hint......

It is the material of the frame that absorbs energy by deforming

The space is filled with air by default

A car crumple zone would work in the same way if the empty space was filled with bananas or fish
... Hint 2... "expanded" polystyrene. Expanded.
Crumple zones are spaces which the structure deforms into in a controlled way. That would be the (expanded) polystyrene in a lid, or a bumper on a car, or a lattice of sheet metal which folds in a given way (heating up in the process) as it dissipates the force exerted on it....not a lot different to an oil filled damper in a suspension unit.

Whilst McWobble is dancing around with his manhood on show, the reality is that it isn't rocket science, and it is fair to say whilst we elucidate in different ways, we are all here alluding to the same end (energy can neither be created or destroyed)
I think the point conveniently being missed here, is that whilst his lid did split, before the point when the load was exceeded, it was absorbing energy in a controlled fashion so it would have offered a degree of protection in his accident. It clearly didn't absorb it all, but without it, he would have likely been dead where he fell.

That is your claim, in reality it is simply a method for you to avoid answering a question directly

Care to answer the question?

Let's try again?

I've actually forgotten why you are so keen on citing a thudguard..can you recap on this one...short version please

Styrene is used in all manner of head protection from cycle lids to skiing, motorcycling, horseriding, to car racing, as well as rock climbing, kayaking, potholing .... the list is endless. The only group I see whingeing abouly the value of head protection is a small minority of people who cycle, and I have no doubt that the true bugbear with their value is actually motivated by vanity.!
If styrene is so good then why is my work hard hat not made from it? Maybe because it's a bit shoot at protecting the head from a substantial impact.

This should be good ;)

Not seen many car bumpers with 1 way valves and a damping fluid in them. Even the Volvo 740 had a corrugated plastic bit rather than fluid damping.

In the simplest form they just have a hole in them which allows the oil to flow in both directions in a controlled manner.
One way valves are to control compression and rebound independently
