I call a cheeful morning/afternoon depending on the time of day, unless there is a group, and they are taking up the whole road/path, then I shout "Track" and blast past them giving them my dirtist look. Or if they are students in Bath and are cycling the wrong way up the one way street I shout "Dead man walking"

Cyclists travel at different speeds. If they have a problem with being passed by you, that's their problem.

So I guess the problem is internal. Judging from your posts (and your user-name) I guess you are a bloke. I'd also guess that you are a reasonably gregarious person who enjoys the company of others, where possible. It is this combination that means you are fastest when trying to overtake someone, and therefore slower when on your own. And therefore feel guilty that you are trying to go faster just in order to prove how fast you are. Temper this with a cheery greeting, or at the very least, and understanding that if you are battling a headwind/slope/both, then so are they. Or fighting to share space with cars, vans and lorries. We're all in in together. Just because we are competing, doesn't mean that we are against each other.

I usualy slow down for the overtakes, and speed up when on my own. If they are only about 1 mph slower i may have to catch up, tail for a little and rest, then pass, and then once a im 20/30 yards infornt, then speed I speed up, weird I know, I do this when running too.

just push them into the hedge as you ride past - that usually prevents them from tailing you...

(that was a joke, by the way)

No, No, its me that tails for a little to judge if its worth passing and get a little rest before I proceed with my usual pace. I supose I should ride myself into a hedge.

I don't care about people going faster overtaking. What I dislike is people overtaking and slowing down, humping your rear wheel for miles and not overtaking, or humping your wheel for miles and overtaking you before turning off, and all the other testosterone-fueled mind games that get inflicted on you when you're just out minding your own business.

Thanx, thats why I mite sit behind say if I know im turning off the main road soon, otherwise ill pass then turn off. I dont sit on someone tail for miles, its only if its took miles to catch up and Im thinking, is there a hill coming up? will he just speed up and overtake me again if I pass.

After this argument with myself I usualy pass, Unless they have noticed me and sped up.

I find being old and slow I dont often have to have these chats with myself!

Of course I did pass a tandem on sunday - but gave them a cheery hello. the lady in the back responded in kind, but the guy in front looked like I was about to jump offf and rape him!
