OK, for a bit of balance:
I'm not an ardent royalist, but certainly not a republican by any stretch of the imagination. And I do believe that Queen Elizabeth deserves some sort of respect on her death. However I have a son who has only spent 9 years under her rule, and is a 9-yr-old boy, so doesn't really understand what the kerfuffle is all about.

So I have offered the option of a big day out on our bikes for the BH on Monday. But I don't want it to be disrispectful, or even dismissive of the momentous event going on. So how do we turn our "taking advantage of the quiet roads" day into a celebration of the life and reign of one Elizabeth Windsor?
Surely the only true measure of respect is in your heart (so to speak), and not in whether you stay in on Monday to sit on your backside watching a state funeral on TV?

I'll pay my respects in my own way, by travelling to Green park with my family to lay a floral tribute, but I'll do that at the weekend.
On Monday I'll be doing a early morning bike ride, then spending most of the day on my DIY loft alteration & insulation project. I'll dip in and out of the TV coverage from time to time, but will mostly leave that until evening when I'll see the news and watch bits of the funeral on catch-up services. Doesn't seem disrespectful to me, and others can do as they wish.

Go very very early…the queue was already hours long by 10am on Sunday when I was up there (didn’t queue!)
The thing with early though is they clear every night so there may be less to look at.

I’m already on holiday next week so I’ll take another day off another time

As well a condolence books I also don't get these mass floral tributes either. I'm sure the florists are loving it, but its doers seem a bizarre thing that thousands of people throw flowers around in green park during the day, and then in the evening a bunch of workers take them all to compost.

apparently the toy Paddington bears and plastic bags of marmalade sandwiches are causing havoc with the composting.

whatever happened to family flowers only and a donation to a chosen charity?

They appear to have reined it in, perhaps following the backlash on Twitter...?

Nobody is telling me when to cycle. I will definitively not watch the funeral and will probably be out on my bike, hopefully on quiet roads, if it is not raining.
I am not British and certainly not a royalist , although I respect the passing of the Queen, it makes no difference to me.

I don't really get it myself either. It does seem a recent thing. I don't mind it though, if that's what people feel they want to do. Like someone else said, it's a once in 70 years thing.

I rather doubt Charles will last to be aged 143, which he would have to if he were to reign for 70 years

If he dies at the same age as his mum, then we only have 23 years before the next one.
